First Focus manager taps CheckFree, ACS, Constellation Brands

By Rex Crum,
Last Update: 12:01 AM ET Aug. 12, 2004

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) - David Jordan's investment strategy is broad but direct.

The manager of the First Focus Growth Opportunities fund (FOGRX: news, chart, profile) invests across many different industries but holds to a key investment criteria: Buying into strong earnings growth at a discount.

"Growth rates vary from industry to industry, and company to company," Jordan said. "But in general, we look for companies that can show growth along with attractive valuations and prices."

CheckFree (CKFR), which operates electronic commerce, software and investment services, receives high marks from Jordan.

The company's technology allows customers to pay bills and to perform other banking services online, and Bank of America is its largest client, he said.

"Their last quarterly report was generally in line with estimates, and there was some selling off of the stock, which we think makes it's price attractive," Jordan said. "There are a number of positives for it in the period ahead."

Looks like Wells Fargo will dance with anyone who provides electronic bills and payments:

"Wells Fargo is delighted to work with CheckFree along with other key payment processors and providers of e-bills, such as Metavante and MasterCard RPPS. By working with multiple partners, today we are able to provide more e-bills to our customers than any other financial institution. . ."

I'm glad to see the gain today, but this news doesn't seem that noteworthy.

CheckFree Wins Multiple Gold Awards in New CityCompass Corporate Actions Benchmark Report

Wednesday September 15, 9:15 am ET

LONDON and ATLANTA, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- CheckFree Software, a division of CheckFree Corporation (Nasdaq: CKFR - News), today announced that its advanced Corporate Actions solution, CheckFree eVent(TM), has just achieved several gold accreditations in the new corporate actions (CA) report: Benchmarking of International Systems and Services (BISS) (1). The report was commissioned by CityCompass, an independent financial services consultant, and prepared by Andrew Chilcott, a senior analyst at Bloor Research, assisted by a panel representing a cross-section of securities practitioners including BNP Paribas SS, UBS, Dresdner Kleinwort, Baring AM, HSBC and others.

The CityCompass BISS report has been broadly divided into three categories: CA systems for Asset Managers, Broker/Dealers and Custodians. CheckFree won a gold label accreditation in the two areas considered to be the most challenging to implement - Broker/Dealers and Custodians.

According to the report, CheckFree scored well in meeting the needs of business requirements, in the richness of its technical functionality and in system maturity. The report also recognises that CheckFree has not only achieved SWIFTReady label status for Corporate Actions, but has the additional ability to generate payment messages. It cites CheckFree as having excelled in several key areas. Says Andrew Chilcott: "CheckFree stood head and shoulders above all the others in providing a step by step, date by date demonstration of every trigger and task undertaken in processing the four events. If I had been a customer, I would have been suitably impressed by the ease of configuration, the transparency of the processing and the care that had been taken to make the demonstration specific to me as a potential customer. I must commend CheckFree on their achievement and setting a standard that other vendors would do well to follow."

CheckFree is also the only solution cited in the report that was able to openly identify the problem of bonds with attached coupons that do not get announced - an important feature of calculating fixed interest entitlements. When it came to issuing confirmations via the Web, CheckFree was mentioned as having a 'notably good solution.' It was further mentioned that the addition of a web-browser makes widespread deployment and system management much easier. Overall, the report confirms that CheckFree always scores highly when the quality of systems and its architecture are taken into account.

Amery Thomas, senior vice president of International Operations for CheckFree Software, said: "We are honored to have been so well reviewed in a report that carries the weight of such prestigious industry experts as Andrew Chilcott and CityCompass. These findings reflect and reward the progress we have made in the latest release of CheckFree eVent and the hard work of a broad team of experts here who have produced a truly end-to-end solution that delivers a low risk 'out of the box' deployment in corporate actions, the most complex of financial software environments."

CheckFree eVent is a next generation corporate actions automation workflow and exception management suite and one of only two CA solutions to have achieved SWIFTReady CA accreditation. Developed by HelioGraph Ltd., which is now part of CheckFree Software, eVent offers a rules-based design with a large library of extensively pre-tested templates and supports SWIFT and other major standards, leveraging an inherently integrated architecture to provide truly global straight through processing (STP) capabilities. . .

Kedrios Signs Seventh Client for Italian Trade Settlement Service Based on CheckFree Solution

Tuesday September 21, 9:15 am ET

-- X-Settle is the first hosted service to handle transactions sent into the new settlement infrastructure introduced by Monte Titoli, Italy's central securities depository and part of the Borsa Italiana --

LONDON and ATLANTA, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- CheckFree Software, a division of CheckFree (Nasdaq: CKFR - News), today announced that X-Settle, a new service developed by CheckFree and its Italian partner, Kedrios, has gone live. X-Settle is the first settlement service designed to support the recently reorganised transaction processing infrastructure at Italy's central securities depository, Monte Titoli (part of the Borsa Italiana group), handling volumes of up to 10,000 transactions per hour. Seven of Italy's largest financial institutions including Deutsche Bank, RAS Bank and Euromobiliare, have already signed up for the service based on CheckFree's TradeFlow TPM, the de-facto standard trade confirmation and settlement workflow solution.

Says Paulo Taddini, chief executive officer of Kedrios: "X-Settle gives our clients a complete single-window solution that provides full connectivity, automation and visibility into the newly improved Monte Titoli RRG Matching and Express II settlement processes from automated operation transmission through to matching and settlement reconciliation." Tolerances can be defined via user-based rules and all transaction and accounting activity is visible from a central, real-time screen. The system, which is run from the Kedrios bureau, is currently handling over 50,000 messages and two 1.5 hour peaks a day from a single server.

In addition to greatly enhanced operational efficiency, X-Settle delivers a new level of risk management by providing a seamless, intelligent transaction process across all market participants, which can be viewed and monitored centrally from single, central point of control. Reconciling all instructions from Monte Titoli and counterparties, X-Settle matches them against internal trade records to produce either aggregated 'net' or 'gross' views of all transactions -- those settled, pending or requiring action. These parameters can be defined or changed easily via user-based rules, and all transaction and accounting activity is visible from a central real-time screen. The system, run from the Kedrios bureau, is extremely robust, handling over 50,000 messages a day from a single server, with the scalability to meet future demands.

When Monte Titoli restructured its operations, it meant that trade processing systems in the Italian market had to be changed correspondingly -- both in terms of formatting and message cycles. The fact that X-Settle was developed in under six months highlights the underlying flexibility of its design.

Rajive Samarasinhe, business development manager Italy, CheckFree Software, explains, "CheckFree's rules-based configurability enabled us get to market early to support Monte Titoli's new settlement infrastructure. Many of Kedrios' existing customers have already signed up for X-Settle and they anticipate strong interest since X-Settle not only streamlines the settlement process, but provides a level of de-risking previously unavailable."

"Kedrios' knowledge of the Italian financial market combined with CheckFree's expertise in developing STP and financial messaging solutions, has enabled us to bring a unique service to market," said Amery Thomas, senior vice president of International Operations for CheckFree Software. "In a few short months it has already attracted an extraordinary level of interest and looks set to become the de facto standard for trade settlement and reconciliation services. . ."
