Thank you for the heads up. I downloaded a pdf version. 360 pages. Looked at the index and looks like a lot of good content.

update unbuntu 14.10 FAIL. update-manager xv repository below

I attempted to run update-manager from a command line in a root terminal. I always set a root password and create a root account. A style I prefer over sudo this and sudo that.

The process kept failing, Finally figured out that some repository I had used no longer existed.

geekconnection.org karmic/ domain was inactive.

did the usual search trying to find someone who had had the problem and someone gave the answer.
arrrrgghhhh!

Finally found PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure help.ubuntu.com

From this and executing the various commands and looking at the files found file /etc/apt/sources.list
this file is the list of repositories where update are found.

gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
edited out the offending bad repositories and all now works.

##deb geekconnection.org karmic/
## deb-src geekconnection.org karmic/

Sell message Message 29493901 xv repository
dumb me I had found name of the sources list back when .....

asus build linux on 2nd drive. Part 1

idea is to run iso mounted on win 7. in stead of burning cdrom.

Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel Download download.microsoft.com

The supposed place where files were unzipped was invisible. So I created a location and unzip to that location

unziped files here.C:\Users\tom\Downloads\UnzipCDcontrol three files.

readme

VCdControlTool

VCdrom.sys

Readme for Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel v2.0.1.1

THIS TOOL IS UNSUPPORT BY MICROSOFT PRODUCT SUPPORT SERVICES

System Requirements
===================
- Windows XP Home or Windows XP Professional

Installation instructions
=========================
1. Copy VCdRom.sys to your %systemroot%\system32\drivers folder.
2. Execute VCdControlTool.exe
3. Click "Driver control"
4. If the "Install Driver" button is available, click it. Navigate to the %systemroot%\system32\drivers folder, select VCdRom.sys, and click Open.
5. Click "Start"
6. Click OK
7. Click "Add Drive" to add a drive to the drive list. Ensure that the drive added is not a local drive. If it is, continue to click "Add Drive" until an unused drive letter is available.
8. Select an unused drive letter from the drive list and click "Mount".
9. Navigate to the image file, select it, and click "OK". UNC naming conventions should not be used, however mapped network drives should be OK.

You may now use the drive letter as if it were a local CD-ROM device. When you are finished you may unmount, stop, and remove the driver from memory using the driver control.

What is / was your objective, to just run Windows 7? I find that I don't need many Windows programs any more on my home desktop rig, especially that more is done via the web. WINE (recent version installed from repository) often does the job. For me, Wine runs the pokerstars.com client and Google Sketchup on occasion. Most other programs have a native Linux version (Google Chrome browser, Skype) or workable substitute (OpenOffice.org).

There are a few programs I use that are windows only. My goal is to work out using linux host OS and then run windows virtual machines to run the few windows programs I still need.
