My father took me and my brothers to watch Pele play when he was on the NY Cosmos. I even bought a lime green soccer ball. In recent years, we also all went to see Wayne Rooney when he played for DC United. We were never really soccer fans per se, but we appreciated iconic athletes.

as a teenager, i had a great passion for the sport...

once i cried of frustration and anger as my favorite team lost... -lol

Brazil won its first World Cup in Sweden in 1958 with Pele, still a teenager (17)... Brazil 5 x 2 Sweden (in Stockholm)

Vavá (2) Pelé (2) & Zagallo scored for Brazil

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Syncd5yq8o4

i watched (on TV) Brazil's Pelé beat Czechoslovakia. 3 x 1 in the final in 1962 in Chile....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnV_ezpSMI0

Pelé was injured, did not play in the final, Garrincha, Zito Amarildo and Vavá scored for Brazil... that was their 2nd WC

then i was at Wembley in 1966.

Pelé was injured in a game against Bulgaria and never came out of the group play

in the final England (and the famous ghost goal) defeated W. Germany 4 x 2...

one hell of a thriller game... Germany scoring first... England tying and going ahead 2 x 1, and in the last minute of regular time Germany tied the game 2 x 2 in overtime,,, the ghost goal came...

i was there, and i saw the ball hit the crossbar, bounced (not in) and out... the linesman (a Russian if i remember correctly) said it had gone in... -lol... Germany lost all hope, and England scored its 4th goal to clear all doubts

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMDuHPvNtgg

then in Mexico City watched at the Azteca Stadium Brazil's win of their 3rd World Cup (Jules Rimet - which meant they kept it for good), beating Italy 4 x 1.... in fairness... the Italians were "spent" due to their semifinal match against west Germany, beating them 4 x 3 in over-time fiercely played (yes i watched that too)... and in my opinion, THAT game has been the BEST match of football ever played.

Italy went ahead 1 x 0... in the last minute of regular time Germany scores the equalizer.... to over time...

in which Germany goes ahead 2 x 1.... and on and on.... best to watch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIxr3kQnYvk

so after such an exciting game (and tiring).... Italy went to the final against the BEST verde-amarela ever assembled

Final 1970 Mexico city

Brazil 4 x 1 Italy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZRdegSdrBI

Brazil (with Pelé) win their 3rd WC hence keeping the Jules Rimet trophy for good.
(1958 Sweden, 1962 - Chile, 1970 Mexico)

enjoy....

I graduated from college in 1982 and toured Europe for July and August with my then girlfriend (an American who lived in Brussels because her father worked at ITT). Even at campsites we noticed people gathering to watch the World Cup (which was meaningless to us). Italy had beaten W Germany prior to us getting that far away from Belgium. I figured, what the heck, I'll buy a commemorative t-shirt. It took me days to find one, and a really generic crappy one that was a size too small at that. Times sure have changed.

Perhaps foreshadowing? Croatia eliminates Brazil. Was 0x0 in regulation. Brazil thought they won in ET then Croatia evened it at 117. Won on PKs. Crazy.

Crazy indeed....

how about Morocco's victory over Portugal.... ?

i think Portugal was a little unlucky, including Ronaldo missing so many gols.....

but credit to the Moroccan goalie for sure ! Portugal 0 x 1 Morocco

France advances over England 2 x 1 Kane missing a penalty
