The House Appropriations Committee on Thursday advanced its fiscal 2025 defense spending bill while adding a provision that would eliminate the military’s makeshift pier off the coast of the Gaza Strip, which has struggled to deliver an adequate level of humanitarian aid to Palestinians facing famine-like conditions.
The committee voted 34-25 along party lines to send the $833 billion bill to the House floor with Democrats objecting to the provision that would shut down the pier, which will cost anywhere between $230 and $320 million according to Pentagon estimates.

The pier may only come back to stage another raid like the Nuseirat massacre.
"At the end of the attack, an Israeli helicopter used to escort the hostages out of Gaza was seen parked on the beach next to the pier, calling into question whether the pier was being used for military purposes."

To: Les H who wrote (42519) | 6/15/2024 11:13:09 AM | From: Les H | | | The international criminal court should investigate Israel’s hostage rescue raid Kenneth Roth
The Gaza health ministry, whose numbers have generally proved reliable, says that at least 274 Palestinians were killed in the operation and more than 600 wounded. The ministry does not distinguish combatants from civilians, but it reports that the dead included 64 children and 57 women, or 44% of the total. Given that many of the men who were killed in the course of the operation were in a nearby market, we must assume that a good proportion of them were civilians as well. That is a horrible civilian toll.
International humanitarian law requires that a military refrain from launching an assault if the anticipated civilian toll “would be excessive in relation to the concrete and direct military advantage anticipated”. It is reasonable to conclude that the Israeli operation fell short of this standard.
All the more so given questions about its necessity. With the rescue of these four hostages, Israeli military operations have freed a total of seven hostages alive. By contrast, more than 100 hostages were released as a result of Israel’s November 2023 ceasefire deal with Hamas. Few doubt that another deal will be necessary to bring most of the remaining hostages home alive. The negotiations have been painfully slow, in part because the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, seems to prioritize his elusive goal of destroying Hamas over the freeing of the hostages.
Israel notes that Hamas endangered civilians by holding the hostages in a densely populated neighborhood in Nuseirat in central Gaza. International humanitarian law requires militaries to take “all feasible precautions” to spare civilians, which Hamas violated by holding the hostages in two apartment buildings in Nuseirat, but that does not relieve Israel of the separate duty to avoid an attack that causes disproportionate harm to civilians. Palestinian civilians do not stop being civilians just because they are endangered by Hamas.
theguardian.com
The idea of gaining sympathy for civilians caught in the crossfire went out the window when Israel decided to fund Hamas to attack Israeli civilians and military alike in order to manufacture pretexts for larger IDF operations. The whole premise is for Israel to paint itself as a victim by helping the other side throw the "first" punch. |

From: tntpal | 6/15/2024 11:54:39 AM | | | | Palestinian Researchers Discover Startling Correlation Between Holding Hostages In Your Home And People Shooting You
GAZA — In what was viewed as a potential breakthrough in addressing tensions in the war-torn region, Palestinian researchers discovered a startling correlation between holding hostages in your home and people shooting you.
The new study's findings came on the heels of a rescue operation conducted by the Israeli military to free hostages being held in Palestinian territory, with results pointing to a clear link between agreeing to imprison hostages in your home and subsequently having soldiers firing live rounds on you in an attempt to free said hostages.
"There is a distinct connection here," said lead Palestinian hostage-holding researcher Amah Salibi. "All of the data we collected showed that keeping hostages in your home leads to an exponential increase in the risk of having people shooting at you at some point in the very near future. The evidence is staggering, really."

According to a new investigative report by Reuters, the Pentagon ran a year-long vaccine disinformation campaign using social media bots — all part of an anti-China political play built on problematic COVID-19 disinformation.
One part of a larger, locally-targeted anti-vax campaign around the world, the propaganda efforts sought to discredit the validity of China’s Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine among internet users in the Philippines, where the vaccine had been deployed. Messaging included the phrase #Chinaangvirus, reportedly Tagalog slang for "China is the virus."
Reuters reports that the campaign was reportedly run to "undermine China’s growing influence in the Philippines," after the vaccines and other public health interventions were made readily available. The efforts "aimed to sow doubt about the safety and efficacy" of such aid. The strategy was greenlit by a secret order signed by then-Secretary of Defense Mark Esper — elevating China and Russia to the priority of "active combat" and allowing for non-State Department-sanctioned psyops.
At least 300 fake accounts impersonating Filipinos were active on X/ Twitter between spring 2020 and mid-2021, right before a period of record deaths in the country — the platform later removed all of the accounts after being asked about their existence by Reuters.

Not to mention that the US also ran a program to deny vaccines and medicines to countries faced with Covid-19 surge while at the same time falsely claiming the virus was "created" at the Wuhan laboratory as a bioweapon. |

The Israeli army has said it will observe a limited daily “tactical pause” along one of the main roads in the Gaza Strip to allow delivery of increased quantities of humanitarian aid, as UN agencies have suspended deliveries from a US-built pier.
The Israel Defense Forces, however, added that the pause should not be seen as a “cessation of hostilities in the southern Gaza Strip”.

The army later backed off its announcement after war cabinet was obviously unaware.
No one can trust Israelis not to use the aid drops as bait stations where they can target missiles or gunfire, but the starvation continues and assists the Israelis in these types of tactics. |

From: Don Green | 6/16/2024 10:04:39 AM | | | | Military Draft Coming? House Passes Measure To Automatically Register Men For Selective ServiceThe House of Representatives on Friday approved its version of the annual defense policy bill, effectively clearing the $883.7 billion National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to move forward in a 217-199 vote which largely fell along party lines. Only three Republicans opposed it.
A number of 'controversial' amendments are part of it, setting up a further fight with Democrats as it moves forward, including a measure empowering the National Guard to crack down on the southern border.
But among the most interesting aspects to the bill for Fiscal Year 2025 is an amendment to the NDAA which automatically registers all draft-age male U.S. residents with the Selective Service System.
File image via Fox NewsThis means that all able-bodied males in the country age 18-26 could potentially be drafted in the scenario of a future war declaration by Congress. The selection would be based on information from Federal databases.
While there has been a Selective Service program in effect for decades, it has long previously only been voluntary, but this new amendment will make registration automatic. The merely 'voluntary' system had been in effect since 1980 - but critics have said that leaving it up for young men to decide for themselves whether to register has resulted in a weak and ineffective system with not enough numbers.
According to more background for this new Congressional push:
The automatic draft registration proposal was instigated by the Selective Service System (SSS) as part of its annual budget request to Congress, introduced by Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-Pa.), “wholeheartedly” endorsed by HASC Chair Mike Rogers (R-Ala.), and approved by voice vote of the full committee without audible opposition. The text of Rep. Houlahan’s proposal can be read here. Her office’s press release on the proposal can be read here.
Rep. Houlahan had been one of the leading advocates of proposals in previous years to expand draft registration to women as well as men. Her latest proposal for automatic registration of men only for a military draft indicates that she is more deeply committed to militarization than to any purported feminism.
There's been a rising number of military papers and reports calling for the reinstatement of a more robust draft system of late, especially in relation to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
For example, last year the US Army War College’s academic journal included a highly disturbing essay on what lessons the US military should take away from the continuing war in Ukraine.
By far the most concerning and most relevant section of that War College essay for the average American citizen is a subsection entitled “Casualties, Replacements, and Reconstitutions” which directly states, “Large-scale combat operations troop requirements may well require a reconceptualization of the 1970s and 1980s volunteer force and a move toward partial conscription.” |

Ukraine didn't reject Russian sovereignty over the Donbass. It rejected changing its constitution to allow the oblasts to hold referendums on their autonomy (not unlike what the US imposed in Iraq with Kurdistan). The key to Ukraine's rejection of the Minsk treaties is the refusal to recognize the legitimacy of the Donbass partisans who comprise the other party to the agreement.
Russia isn't likely to achieve military control over those four regions till the end of 2025 according to Putin's update on the SMO.
