AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Stock Tracker — Where to Buy AMD's 6-Core CPU
By Jason England 20 hours ago

Here's where you can buy AMD's excellent mid-range Zen 3 CPU.

Finding an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X available at (or even close) to its $299 MSRP these days makes you about as lucky as Indiana Jones picking the Holy Grail on his first try. This processor has become an incredibly popular choice for anyone looking to grab a no-compromise gaming chip on a budget, which means there's plenty of competition for its limited stock.

Earning 4.5 stars in our AMD Ryzen 5 5600X review, this chip is so highly sought after, because of its strong single- and multi-threaded performance, leading power efficiency and PCIe Gen4 support. It also features stellar thermals, a bundled cooler and overclocking capability, so there’s a lot to love here.

While certain other Ryzen chips, like the Ryzen 7 5800X, are more frequently in stock now, it can feel next to impossible to find this lower-priced chip without a more eagle-eyed lookout. But we can help with that by showing you all the places you can pick one up and giving you some tips about when the retailers usually restock.

P.S.
After more than a year reading about Leading Edge extreme shortages and rapacious pricing, TSMC saying shortage mainly at lagging edge is total hooey. A VERY good thing.

My WAG?
Gonna see demand skyrocket way more with DDR5 and PCIe 5.
Ditto again with 3nm.

JUST the start.

Samsung offers 5G for under $300
by NICK FARRELL
on08 APRIL 2021

Samsung has announced a large Galaxy A update, with five new phones.

The Galaxy A12 ($109.99), Galaxy A02s ($179.99), Galaxy A32 5G ($299.99), Galaxy A42 5G ($399.99) and Galaxy A52 5G (499.99).

The Galaxy A Series covers every market segment and gives excellent options for every budget.

At the entry level, the Galaxy A12 is affordable and represents a big win for MediaTek, which supplies the Galaxy A12’s computing platform. The Galaxy A32 5G is another big win. It has a MediaTek Dimensity 720.

The Galaxy A12, Galaxy A42 5G, and Galaxy A52 5G are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 and 750G.

The Galaxy A32 5G and Galaxy A52 5G are interesting because for $299.99 A32 5G you get Samsung’s most affordable 5G phone. It also has all the basics really well: triple camera, huge battery and extensible storage via microSD.

The Galaxy A52 5G has high-end features such as a 120Hz display, a quad-camera (with optical image stabilization), fast charging, and a waterproof chassis in the sub-$500 market.

For $700, the Galaxy S20 FE (Fan Edition) has a formidable value proposition as well and is worth considering. The Galaxy A phones will start selling tomorrow.

3 [5nm 5G] iPhone 12 phones contribute to 71% of Apple sales in Jan
Three iPhone 12 series smartphones (12, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max) have contributed to 71 per cent of Apples total sales for the month of January, as the tech giant grabbed six places in the global top 10 best-selling smartphones list.

New Delhi: Three iPhone 12 series smartphones (12, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max) have contributed to 71 per cent of Apples total sales for the month of January, as the tech giant grabbed six places in the global top 10 best-selling smartphones list.

The Apple iPhone 12 led the list followed by the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, according to Counterpoint Research's 'Market Pulse' report.

There was a pent-up demand for 5G upgrades within the iOS base which, along with strong carrier promotions, resulted in robust sales for the iPhone 12 series.

"Besides, Apple launched the new iPhone series later than the usual date, resulting in strong demand for these models spilling over into January," the report said late on Saturday.

Nearly one-third of Apple's sales for the iPhone 12 series came from the US due to strong carrier promotions and 5G demand.

"The iPhone 12 Pro Max was the top-selling model in the US, as consumers preferred the high-end version. Old models iPhone SE 2020 and iPhone 11 also continued to do well," the report mentioned.

The iPhone 12 mini made it to the top 10 list, trailing the other iPhone 12 series models as well as the iPhone 11.

"The iPhone 12 mini, which offers specs similar to that of the iPhone 12 at a lower price, failed to attract buyers because of a smaller display and lower battery capacity".

The sub-$150 devices Redmi 9A and Redmi 9 managed to grab fifth and sixth spots, respectively, in January.

These smartphones together contributed a 25 per cent share to Xiaomi's total sales for the month which is gradually expanding its share in the Middle East and Africa ( MEA) region.

Samsung's Galaxy A21s managed to maintain its position in the top 10 list.

The Galaxy A31, the other Samsung model in the top 10, entered the list for the first time.

"Samsung is aggressively promoting the Galaxy A series. It comes with a premium design, fresh colours and latest specs at affordable prices," the report noted.

Through the A series, Samsung is also looking to attract the users of Honor devices, present in sizeable numbers in Europe, Latin America, South East Asia and MEA.

PC shipments reached 84 million worldwide in the January-March period, a modest 8 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2020.

While sequential declines are typical for the first quarter, a decline this small has not been seen since the first quarter of 2012 when the PC market declined 7.5 per cent sequentially, according to IDC's 'Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker' showed on Saturday.

"Unfulfilled demand from the past year has carried forward into the first quarter and additional demand brought on by the pandemic has also continued to drive volume," said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC's Mobile Device Trackers.

"However, the market continues to struggle with setbacks including component shortages and logistics issues, each of which has contributed to an increase in average selling prices," he added.

Apple with 8 per cent market share (by shipments) was fourth while Acer Group with 5 per cent came fifth.

The continued resurgence in the PC market as well as increases in average selling prices (ASPs) have primarily been driven by growth in gaming, the need for higher performance notebooks in the enterprise, and an increase in demand for touchscreens within the education segment.

Ryan Reith, program vice president with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers said that the ongoing shortages in the semiconductor space only further prolong the ability for vendors to refill inventory and fulfill orders to customers.

"We believe a fundamental shift has occurred around the PC, which will result in a more positive outlook for years to follow. All three segments business, education, and consumer are experiencing demand that we didn't expect to happen regardless of many countries beginning their 'opening up' process," Reith noted.

Component shortages will likely be a topic of conversation for the majority of 2021.

"The more important question should be what PC demand will look like in 2-3 years," Reith said.

AMD Ryzen 7000 Series ‘Raphael’ CPUs Leaked In New Roadmap – 5nm, Zen4, PCIe 5.0, DDR5 And Navi 2 Graphics Coming In 2022

By Usman Pirzada
Apr 10, 2021 10:57 EDT

A missing piece of AMD's upcoming roadmap was just posted by Twitter user @sepeuwmjh (via Videocardz). The roadmap reveals a missing codename that is suspected to be AMD's lineup of desktop CPUs featuring Zen4 technology and Navi2 graphics. The missing corner is from a roadmap that was originally posted by MebiuW and has since been cleanly compiled by @Olrak29_.

AMD's Raphael APUs: TSMC 5nm, Zen4 architecture and Navi2 iGPU, currently scheduled to land in early 2022
The following snippet was tweeted by twitter user sepeuwmjh, which appears to be a generic leak account from a company insider. Considering it matches 1-1 the leak by MebiuW ages ago, it is likely that they are from the same source.

For those wondering where Raphel fits, it will succeed Warhol which will succeed the Vermeer lineup of processors. Vermeer is the mainstream desktop lineup from AMD right now and does not include an iGPU - which has been a major source of push back when dealing with corporate clients (which absolutely require an iGPU). Similarly, Warhol is also without an iGPU. Raphael, on the other hand, shakes things up completely and adds an RDNA2 block as integrated graphics.

Complete leaked roadmap compiled by @Olrak29_

The platform will also completely update the socket design as it will go from AM4 to AM5 with Raphael. The process is also going to shift to 5nm from 6nm (which is just a revision of 7nm). At the same time PCIe 5.0 is going to be introduced to the platform along with the shift to DDR5. In other words, this is going to be one of the biggest changes to AMD's desktop platform in a very long time. If the roadmap is to be believed, it will start shipping in the early 2022 range so we should see an announcement on CES 2022 assuming there are no delays.

At the same time, Cezanne, the APU platform is going to be succeeded by Rembrandt which will be succeeded by Phoenix. Just like Raphael, Phoenix is going to be the mobility APU platform to look out for. It will also feature Zen 4, NAVI 2 graphics, AM5, PCIe 5.0 and DDR 5 memory. Considering the prevailing demand and supply situation in the semiconductor industry however and seeing how chocked TSMC is, it is possible that this roadmap slips a little so we would urge a pinch of salt and wait for further confirmation before making plans. That said, it is clear that AMD is preparing an absolute monster lineup in 2022.

Nanya posts [193% QoQ] profit hike in 1Q21
Siu Han, Taipei; Jessie Shen, DIGITIMES
Monday 12 April 2021

Taiwan-based DRAM maker Nanya Technology has reported net profit hiked 192.7% sequentially to NT$2.71 billion (US$95 million) in the first quarter of 2021. EPS for the quarter came to NT$0.88.

Nanya disclosed its DRAM bit sales grew about 5% on quarter while ASPs rose 15%. Revenue for the first quarter came to NT$17.73 billion, rising about 20% sequentially.

The rally in DRAM ASPs drove Nanya's gross margin to 29.1% in the first quarter, up 7.1pp on quarter, the company noted.

Nanya expects to see its DRAM ASPs continue rising in the second quarter, as demand outstrips supply buoyed by growing demand for consumer electronics applications, strong demand for notebooks, in growth in server demand, and stable demand for handsets.

Growth in the global DRAM bit supply will remain constrained in the first half of this year, said Nanya president Pei-Ing Lee, adding that supply will still be unable to satisfy demand.

In particular, Lee continued, the supply of DDR3 chips has been extremely tight. The overall DRAM supply may remain tight through the end of this year, Lee said.

Nanya has set its capex goal for 2021 at up to NT$15.6 billion, the majority of which will be spent on the development of the chipmaker's 10nm-class process technology.

Nanya is scheduled to start delivering samples of 8Gb DDR4 chips built using its in-house developed first-generation 10nm process in the second half of this year, and has kicked off R&D of DDR5 product designs, according to Lee. The company has also stepped up the development of second-generation 10nm process with risk production slated for the third quarter.

'remarkable' ABF demand:

Eternal sees mounting sales of PIC material for flexible PCB
Jane Wang, Taipei; Willis Ke, DIGITIMES
Monday 12 April 2021

Taiwan-based Eternal Materials continue to enjoy stable growth momentum for PCB-use dry film photoresist and is optimistic that its sales of both PIC (photoimageable coverlay) for flexible PCB (FPCB) and photoresist for packaging substrates will pick up steadily.

Eternal is now the world's largest vendor of dry film photoresist for PCB production recording a global market share of 33-34%, higher than international peers Asahi, Hitachi and DuPont, having acquired Shipley in the US, Japan's Nichigo-Morton, and Elga-Europe, according to industry sources. It also boasts strong customer bases in Taiwan and China.

Eternal's photoresist division director Johnny Liao said at a recent company investors conference that its order visibility for electronics materials has been clear for months ahead amid strong demand for PCB and substrates. Besides dry film photoresist for rigid boards for handset applications, its PIC is increasingly applied to FPCB production as the material boasts high resolution and evenness and can help FPCB makers boost yield rates and cut production costs.

Liao said that PIC penetration in handsets and non-handset applications are expected to surge significantly in the next 1-3 years, adding growth momentum to his company.

He continued Eternal's Japanese subsidiary Nikko-Materials will see its shipments of vacuum lamination machines grow remarkably thanks to strong demand for ABF substrates and FCBG substrates.
