Nokia has admitted that cellular sales are getting weaker. There are rumors that the same holds for Ericcson (says CNBC). Anything remotely cellular is getting hammered. |

What's Nokia's global strategy compared to the other cellular providers? I believe in Fortune there is a discussion of how much growth cellular can support on a global level, especially in the Far East. The US market might be getting saturated, but there are plenty of other potential customers out there in the world. |

On a more positive note after today's further thrashing, Paine Webber put out a buy rating on the stock late this afternoon. The analyst said he sees the company earning $3.60 a share for 1996. He further added that the stock was well off it's year high of 78 set in September. He said at present this provides investors with an opportunity. He said he sees strong growth in the worldwide digital cellular market, with 50 million subscribers today growing to 350 million over five years.
This news didn't seem to help the stock much today, but once the hysteria of sellers settles down, many more analysts will look at this stock and come to the same conclusion that it is undervalued.

Actually, I hold Motorla, so I don't know much about the other cellular providers. I believe Nokia's strongest presence is in Europe. Motorola has a strong world-wide presence, especially in the Far East. They are doing a lot in China, where the porential is huge, but that doesn't guarantee profits. Motorola is more diversified than the other companies, and therefore less subject to changes in the cellular business, but a big drop in cellular would still have a significant effect on their bottom line. |

More on Nokia. Nokia said that their profit will be below plan for two reasons: slower consumer electronics sales and production problems (i.e. lack of available parts) in their cellular business. They said their forecast for demand of cellular was still correct; Ericsonn said that they are also on plan in cellular. The sell-off in all these stocks seems way overdone to me. |

This is a tough call, because Nokia didn't say how much they were going to miss projections by. Remember, even at current prices the stock is way above what it was a few years ago. I don't know the company, but if I was interested I would wait until the next quarter earnings are out (I don't know when that is). |

I bought 2000 NOKIA this week in the 32.5 range. Paine Webber is pounding the table on this one, it trades at 10x 1996 EPS, it trades at a significant discount to its peers Motorola and Ericcson, and it has superior technology on the digital wireless side, and is a market leader in Europe, solid number 2 in US behind Motorola. let me know if you want detailed info, i have 4 faxes from Paine Webber this week alone on Nokia. regards. |
