It took me a few minutes to understand what James was saying. But when it sunk in, it sure made a lot of sense. I hear your reservations:

"I don't think this portends a takeover on the immediate horizon. If there were an eager buyer, it'd be easier for Mer to sell out than to have the acquirer go through all the expense and aggravation of a public tender. "

I am wondering if what you may be missing here is that although you may be correct that it'd be easier for Mer to sell out, it would be immediately profitable for the individuals to proceed as James has outlined.

I think James is on to something.
