Anthony DeSio, Founder and Former Head of Mail Boxes Etc., Takes over Helm at IDTec in Vista
PR Newswire, Tuesday, November 10, 1998 at 17:35
VISTA, Calif., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Anthony (Tony) DeSio, who founded Mail Boxes Etc. in 1981, and was its president and CEO until the company was sold in 1997, has been named CEO and Chairman of the Board of International Digital Technology, Inc. ("IDTec"), (BB: IDTX) based in Vista, CA. A leading designer, integrator and marketer of sophisticated wide-format digital printing software systems, IDTec is involved in several markets where DeSio's expertise in franchising, financial matters and international business, will be invaluable to the Company's expansion plans. "I believe there are vast business and consumer markets for low cost, limited quantity, specialty print products which can be produced by the technology pioneered by IDTec," DeSio said of his new company. "IDTec's proprietary process for coating canvas, vinyl, and other print media, along with our leadership position in the development of software required to rapidly reproduce high quality images using low cost, wide format digital printers, places IDTec in an excellent position to capture a significant share of several emerging markets," said DeSio. DeSio's relationship with IDTec began in June 1998 when the Company acquired his most recent business venture, a start-up company called Memories on Canvas(TM), and DeSio became Chairman of IDTec's Advisory Committee. Memories on Canvas uses a computerized, digital inkjet printing process to reproduce an ordinary photograph onto an artist-quality canvas suitable for use as a wall hanging. The acquisition gave IDTec a third profit center in the large format printing industry complementing its proprietary graphics system, media and substrate sales. The Company also intends to develop a franchising program built around the Memories on Canvas process, and has recently acquired PhotoArts (UK) Ltd., a UK firm which is currently franchising a similar concept utilizing IDTec's technology. DeSio's career with MBE paralleled and, some would say propelled, a golden age of franchising that began in the '70s and flourishes today. Under his leadership, Mail Boxes Etc. grew from a single outlet in Carlsbad, CA., to 3,500 stores with retail sales of over $1 billion and master licenses in more than 50 countries. He was twice named Entrepreneur of the Year: first by Inc. Magazine in 1989, and later by the International Franchise Association in 1996. In addition, during 1971 and 1972, DeSio was a Presidential Interchange Executive assigned to the Executive Office of the President of the United States. Prior to MBE, Mr. DeSio had a successful engineering management career with Lockheed, Western Union and General Electric, where he established GE's first digital image processing laboratory in 1973.
