It's the same in Vancouver. For most of my life no one I knew had AC, but after the heat dome in 2021 killed over 600 people around here, it has become much more common. There are even government programmes to help the poor get portable ACs.

But of course there is a cost. All the energy needed to run the AC is straining the electrical grid, and depending how the energy you use is being produced, using AC can make global warming worse.
