When people claim my family lived without antisemitism and as equals in Iraq and Tunisia before 1948 (which is FAR from true), I remind them that the only place in the Middle East where Jews have ever lived without antisemitism and as equals with Arabs is Israel. My ancestors in Muslim lands lived as second-class dhimmis for generations. Israel, our true home, was the only place where we could find refuge and equal rights. For Jews and many Arabs, Israel provides us with the safety that no other Middle Eastern country could. It’s never more glaringly obvious that someone hasn’t spent any time in Israel—or the Middle East at large—than when they make the “peace before 1948” argument.
