Yes, towards the end of the Republican system. Traditionally, they led simple lives, ate simple food, drunk in moderation, even too much interest in sex was considered un-manly. As the system started to fall apart, they got into costly (designer?) clothes and expensive food and drink. Even the great hero Julius Caesar, when he wasn’t fighting wars, was known to love fancy clothes and showed great interest in ladies.
