1627 ET - American notified flight crews this week of plans to cancel 1,175 flights in July and August as the airline looks to create more slack in its schedule to improve reliability, according to unions that represent its pilots and flight attendants. American CEO Robert Isom said that American is taking "proactive steps to build additional buffer," into its schedule for the remainder of the year, to better align with staffing resources and operating conditions. Other airlines, including United and Delta, have also pared back flying and reined in plans this year in order to run more reliably. Near term cancellations can be inconvenient for customers, particularly when flights are full--as they are this summer--making it difficult to rebook. An American spokesman said the airline culled its August schedule by about 1% last weekend. ( alison.sider@wsj.cpom ; @alyrose)
