Pre-orders of ‘iPhone 13’ in China reach 6 million units… Will Apple's 'supercycle' continue?

The ‘iPhone 13’ is showing an unusual reaction at the beginning of its release. In China, the world's largest smartphone market, pre-order sales have reached 6 million units, and they are doing better than expected. Due to such an increase in demand in China, orders for iPhone 13 are also expected to increase by about 20%.

According to Wedbush, a US brokerage firm on the 24th, orders for the iPhone 13 are expected to increase by about 20% compared to the iPhone 12, the previous product, due to strong demand from China. The demand for iPhone 13 this year is the most explosive in the Chinese market. So far, the largest number of iPhone 13 pre-orders in the global market is in China.

On the 23rd, Hong Kong's South China Morning Post also reported that pre-orders for the iPhone 13 series in China recorded 5 million pre-orders in three days. Daniel Ives, senior analyst at Wedbush, also mentioned in a recently published report that "the iPhone 13 pre-orders in China have reached 5 million or 6 million units."

The number of pre-orders of about 6 million units is not Apple's official tally. Nevertheless, it seems that the initial popularity of the iPhone 12 is noticeably higher than that of its predecessor, the iPhone 12. Initially, the iPhone 13 was criticized by the industry as “innovation is hard to find” right after its release on the 14th (US time), but since its launch, it has been well received in China, the world's largest smartphone market.

This initial increase in demand in China is expected to drive iPhone 13 sales volume growth. According to Wedbush, Apple's annual iPhone production is estimated at 130 million to 150 million units per year. Wedbush noted that the current order volume for the iPhone 13 series is about 90 million units, which is higher than the iPhone 12 order volume, which was initially 80 million units.

Previously, Taiwanese Apple expert Ming Chiguo, a researcher at TF International in Taiwan, also predicted that demand for the iPhone 13 would increase by more than 15% compared to the previous model.

It is also predicted that Apple will continue its supercycle until next year, using the success of the iPhone 13 as a stepping stone. According to Webdebussy, it is estimated that 250 million of the 975 million iPhones released worldwide are awaiting a device upgrade. This also means that there is sufficient demand for replacement with the iPhone 13. Accordingly, some analysts and industry analysts predict that Apple will succeed in the box office from iPhone 12 to iPhone 13.

An industry official said, “In terms of simple device characteristics, the iPhone 13 is a series that has not changed, but several environmental factors are advantageous for the iPhone 13. There are a lot of variables, so there is a good chance that it will be more successful than its predecessor.”
