The $35 billion acquisition of Xilinx ( XLNX +1.6%) by Advanced Micro Devices ( AMD +1.2%) is spurring calls for behavioral remedies in China, according to news service MLex.Industry players are raising flags over downstream applications of field-programmable gate arrays - FPGA, where Xilinx is in a strong position.Xilinx's FPGAs are being widely used among Chinese companies for such applications as functional verification of CPUs and application-specific integrated circuits, or ASICs.And while previous views compared the AMD-Xilinx deal to a precedent merger allowed by China - that of Intel ( INTC +1%) and Altera - new concerns focus on whether there will be continued supplies of FPGAs.Companies have expressed worries about that issue to China's State Administration for Market Regulation, MLex says. Xilinx's FPGA share in China is estimated at more than 50%, far ahead of Intel's (nearly 30%).AMD still awaits approval from China but has received antitrust clearance in the U.S. and Europe. Recently, AMD was said to have made progress in China with large third parties ready to bless the transaction.
