Mid-to-large OLED shipments surpassed 10 million units in the first half

Amid the stagnant growth of the smartphone market, organic light emitting diode (OLED) smartphones are also showing signs of slowing growth.

According to the '2021 Medium-Large OLED Display Semi-Annual Report' published by UBI Research on the 20th, the shipments of IT OLEDs such as tablet PCs and laptops sold in the first half of 2021 and OLED for TVs exceeded 10 million units for the first time and recorded 10.29 million units. .

OLED sales for IT and TV in the first half of this year were $29 billion, more than double the $13.86 billion in the first half of last year. According to the report, driven by the growth of the OLED market for IT, Samsung Display is gradually expanding its A2 rigid OLED line's smartphone panel production capacity for IT to increase OLED production for tablet PCs and notebooks. In the second half, the 40-50K A2 line is expected to be put into production of OLED for IT. In addition, Apple's iPad OLED production is expected from the end of the year, and the explosive growth of the IT OLED market is expected in 2022. To respond to this trend early, Samsung Display is hastening to invest in the 8.5G line for IT.

The report analyzed that LG Display also confirmed the investment in the 6G line in Paju to secure the OLED market for IT. The OLED TV market is rapidly expanding beyond imagination. In the first half of last year, shipments were 1.26 million units, but in the first half of this year, it is recording 3.4 million units. In the second half of the year, there is Black Friday, so shipments are expected to increase more than in the first half.
