China's BOE to supply OLED exclusively for iPhone 12 for 'additional production'

China's BOE will supply all of the organic light emitting diode (OLED) panels to the iPhone 12 series, which Apple is additionally producing. The iPhone 12 series was released from October to November last year, and the cumulative sales volume for 10 months was close to 150 million units.

According to the industry on the 17th, BOE will exclusively supply flexible OLED panels for the iPhone 12 series, which will be additionally produced in the second half of this year. It is known that it will supply 14 to 15 million panels for the 'iPhone 12' and 'iPhone 12 Mini'.

Panels for the iPhone 12 series have been supplied by Samsung Display and LG Display since last year. However, the two companies were not included in the supply chain related to this follow-up volume. In particular, it is understood that LG Display does not have enough capacity for Apple's line due to the upcoming iPhone 13 series.

LG Display is expected to supply about 30 million flexible OLED panels to the iPhone 13 series this year.

During the same period, Samsung Display will supply about 80 million panels for this series. BOE failed to supply the first OLED for iPhone 13.

In terms of total volume, Samsung Display is expected to supply 120 million to 130 million OLED panels for the iPhone 13 series. LG Display is expected to supply about 50 million panels.

However, it is analyzed that BOE has reached the threshold of supplying panels for the new iPhone. If BOE supplies OLEDs to iPhones, Apple will naturally be able to put price pressure on Samsung Display and LG Display.

An industry official said, "There is a possibility that BOE will re-enter the iPhone 13 supply chain at the end of the year or early next year."

Earlier, some predicted that BOE would supply 7-10 million flexible OLEDs to older iPhones this year, but it has supplied more than this. The iPhone 12 series is a product that shipped about 66 million units last year alone, which means that BOE is supplying panels to this series in large quantities.

The series sold 100 million units within seven months of its release. It recorded a box office success that was comparable to the iPhone 6 series, which recorded the highest sales of all time.
