|I agree with you. Rodgers has earned the right and has the football IQ to have some input. Where things go wrong is when a guy wants a particular player but doesn't consider the cap implications. I don't care if they're friends or have high character - they need to produce to the level of their contract and we need to have the space. Randall Cobb NEVER produced to his 10 mil per year contract so we had to let him go because his numbers didn't work back then.|
Example - Bart Starr had more character than any guy I know but we didn't sign him to be Rodgers backup.
In fairness, the Packers have needed to go all in for a number of years to help Rodgers. The biggest weakness on that team (as you pointed out) has been defense. We spent years trying to draft for D but kept striking out. When Gutekunst took over we signed some FA's on defense and we've drafted better. I've outlined the players that I wanted during the drafts (again - during - not 20/20 hindsight) and the pick I would have made in 2020 would have been Patrick Queen - not Love. My choice was logical, addressed a need and would not have satisfied Aaron Rodgers.
Rodgers needs to realize that the defense has been the biggest issue. We didn't lose to Tampa last year because of a bad offense. There were several reasons (one of which was Rodgers decision making) but the biggest reason was because Kevin King got burned for a TD before half that should have never happened - the guy sucks! Ya know why he's on the team? Because Ted Thompson drafted him instead of the guy I wanted - TJ Watt! That's not Gutekunst's fault - it's on Ted Thompson.
Rodgers was wrong to go public the day before the draft. He's lying when he denies that he or one of his minions didn't leak the story. He's also wrong if he believes that he'll leave GB and win a SB. His best chance this year and for the next several are in GB. The management is being short sighted and betting their jobs on Love and Rodgers is being a prideful d!ckhead as he blames management and throws fellow players under the bus.
So...yeah...I'd hear him out and give him some say (NE should have done that with Brady) but if he's unwilling to commit by mid-season I'd trade both Adams and Rodgers to make sure we get compensated.
He wants a commitment from us and I want one from him
Sorry for the verbose rant.
