Apple to likely overtake Samsung in OLED smartphone shipment this year

Apple used more OLED panels in its smartphones compared to Samsung in the first half of the year, data from UBI Research showed.

It is highly like that Cupertino will overtake its South Korean rival in OLED smartphone shipment this year due to the upcoming launch of iPhone 13.

Out of the total smartphone OLED panel shipment in the first half of the year, between 60 million units to 64 million units were used by Apple, UBI Research said.

By comparison, around 55 million units to 56 million units were used by Samsung.

The iPhone maker also only uses the relatively more expensive flexible OLED panels, while the South Korean tech giant uses both flexible and rigid OLED panels. Rigid OLED panels are usually used in mid to low-end smartphones.

Out of Samsung’s total OLED use, 13 million units to 14 million units were flexible OLED panels, while 42 million units were rigid OLED panels, the research firm noted.

Panel shipment usually exceeds that of the smartphone that uses them by 10%.

This is because smartphone vendor order more than their target production volume as defects can occur during assembly and they need spare parts for repair.

Apple procures its OLED panels from both Samsung Display and LG Display, while Samsung only uses them from Samsung Display.

According to Counterpoint Research, Apple sold over 100 million units of iPhone 12 series after only seven months since they were released.

Cupertino also released no new phones in the first half of 2021. During the same time period, Samsung launched its Galaxy S21 series and new models in its Galaxy A series.
