Merck to supply LG Display POLED material for the first time... iPhone 13 input

German Merck expands business area. Following LG Display's large organic light emitting diode (OLED) materials, it also supplies small and medium-sized related products.

On the 22nd, Merck announced that it had started mass production of plastic OLED (POLED) hole transport layer (HTL) materials to be supplied to LG Display at the production facility of Poseung Industrial Complex in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province. It will be used in the ‘iPhone 13’ series to be released by Apple in the second half of the year.

In the meantime, Merck has been manufacturing HTL for large OLED panels of LG Display. HTL is one of the common layers that smoothly transport holes generated between electrodes on a glass substrate or a flexible film substrate in OLED. It is also used as an electron blocking layer (EBL), which prevents penetration of the light emitting layer into the electron transport layer. As a result, it contributes to improving panel efficiency and lifespan.

With this transaction, Merck entered the mobile market. In the case of LG Display, POLED mass production began in earnest when it entered Apple's supply chain in 2019. Large OLEDs are glass-based.

According to market research firm DSCC, the number of flexible (flexible) OLED panels shipped by LG Display last year was 31.7 million units. This is a threefold increase compared to 2019 (9.7 million units). This year, the number is estimated at 52.7 million.
