I brought up geomagnetic jerks over two years ago 1177. There was evidence that they were coming at an accelerated pace and tied to the geomagnetic reversal. There was also evidence that one had occurred just prior to then.
There's also evidence that they're one cause of rotational "glitches". Millisecond speed-ups in Earths rotation.

At the core/mantle boundary there is a somewhat delicate matrix binding the two. If it were not for this, the weight of the polar ice caps, which is unbalanced with the Earth's angle of rotation, would provide the momentum necessary to slide the solid mantle over the liquid core to bring that mass unbalance into equilibrium.
