Rambus set to benefit as Intel's Ice Lake chips move to volume rollout - Wells Fargo
Jan. 12, 2021 10:25 AM ET Rambus Inc. (RMBS) By: Jason Aycock, SA News Editor

Rambus ( RMBS +1.2%) is set to benefit from Intel's ( INTC +2.7%) confirmation of "volume production" for its next-generation server processors, Wells Fargo says.Assuming that Intel is truly ramping up on the 10nm processors (Ice Lake 3rd Generation Xeon Scalable), Rambus should be the beneficiary because Rambus should have more DDR4 buffer chip market share associated with Ice Lake; and Ice Lake's eight memory channels vs. the six of previous generations means an ASP boost for Rambus - with an opportunity to sell 33% more buffers per server chip, analyst Gary Mobley says. Not all customers will use all eight memory channels, he notes. He also points out DDR5 is the next big product cycle for Rambus' buffer chips, and it will mean another ASP boost (as a three-die solution vs. two-die for DDR4). That's set to roll in very late in 2021 and into the next year, he says.Shares are up 10% over the past five days.
