LG Display to supply first OLED panel to iPhone this year ... Between 15 million and 16 million units
Issued on: 2018.01.02

LG Display will supply organic light emitting diode (OLED) panels to Apple's new iPhone this year . Currently, it supplies 15 million to 16 million units based on the iPhone. LG Display is said to be negotiating with Apple to increase supply. Samsung Display In addition, LGD is also expected to become a supplier of OLED for iPhone.

According to the industry on February 2, LG Display temporarily confirmed the supply of flexible OLED panels to Apple's new iPhone product in the second half of this year. Estimated volume is between 15 million and 16 million. Compared to its competitor, Samsung Display, the volume is low. However, it has been recognized for its quality competitiveness to be able to supply flexible OLED for iPhone.

The panel for the iPhone to be supplied by LG Display is known as 6.5 inch. Samsung Display, the No. 1 supplier, is expected to supply smaller panels, such as 5.8 inches or 6 inches. The industry also predicted that LGD will deliver some of its large-screen models, while Samsung Display will extinguish most of its billings.

Apple and LG Display are currently negotiating for additional supply, but they are expected to supply 15 ~ 16 million panels.

LG Display plans to mass-produce Apple panels at the 6th generation flexible OLED line E6 in Paju, Gyeonggi-do. It is expected that the company will begin early operation in 2Q09 and start production in 2H09.

LG Display has 6G OLED production capacity of 30,000 sheets per month in Paju E6. Assuming 100% yield and 100% utilization rate on a 6-inch panel basis, it can produce 5.94 million units per month.

LG Display will start one production line in E6 first, and the other one will be operational by the end of this year. The actual production capacity of 30,000 sheets is expected to be in operation next year. Given the short experience in 6G OLED production and low yields, the gap between actual supply capacity and production capacity is large.

LG Display rushed to mass production this year to supply 6G OLED panels to Apple. Based on its long-standing trust relationship with the LCD business and OLED technology, it has steadily negotiated with Apple. In the market, however, the possibility of supply this year was low, but expectations for the small- and mid-sized flexible OLED business have increased as early supply volume is secured.
