Hackers attacked Gemalto servers per news earlier this year and revenue collapsed. NXP makes the competing version of NFC chips and security solutions and is also facing buyout by QCOM.
Thales has a longstanding joint security relationship with French and British security departments. Theft of critical infrastructure tech has accelerated in recent years, with foreign governments the primary suspect. This follows years after European GPS satellite tech and its security protocols were stolen and Chinese BeiDou satellite tech emerged using newer IC and software superior to EU and USA solutions; and mysteriously commercial aircraft suffered navigational disasters in the following years.
The Cold War continues. If we cannot harden our minds first, then we cannot harden our defenses either.
