Ellipsis Jetpack supports XLTE. To keep up with customer demand for consistent high data speeds, Verizon Wireless' Ellipsis Jetpack mobile hot spot received an upgraded LTE chipset from Sequans Communications that also supports the carrier's XLTE service. That service taps into the 1.7/2.1 GHz spectrum band to provide additional bandwidth support for the carrier's LTE network. The new model can offer higher throughput, battery life up to 10 hours and faster start-up time, according to the company. The product operates on the 700 MHz and 1.7/2.1 GHz bands Verizon Wireless is currently using to support most of its LTE traffic. The updated LTE chipset is built on Sequans' Mont Blanc LTE platform, which includes Category 4 throughput capabilities, air interface cancellation technology, an integrated network and application CPU and radio frequency integrated circuits... Digitimes Research: Verizon to ship three million own-brand tablets in 2015 DIGITIMES Research, Taipei 17 December 2014
... several telecom carriers are also achieving good results selling own-brand 4G tablets that bundle with their telecom services, according to Digitimes Research's new findings. Among the telecom carriers, the largest wireless/mobile telecom carrier in the US, Verizon Wireless, has performed the best. Verizon launched its first own-brand 4G tablet, the Ellipsis 7, manufactured by Quanta Computer, at the end of 2013. Because the device is only selling for below US$100 with a 2-year 4G service contract, the attractive pricing and the carrier's strong telecom channel presence is expected to boost the Ellipsis series products' shipments to 2.16 million units in 2014.
Verizon has recently launched the 8-inch Ellipsis 8 tablet for the 2014 year-end holidays. The carrier offered the device for free with a 4G service contract during Black Friday promotions and the device is now priced at US$49 with a contract. With the tablet's attractive pricing, Digitimes Research expects Ellipsis series shipments to reach three million units in 2015. Digitimes Research believes the success of the Ellipsis tablets were due to three major factors: 4G services' high transmission speed, its low penetration rate and the tablets' low communication module costs...As for costs, Verizon's high 4G coverage and strategy to gradually phase out its 3G CDMA2000 business also increase the competitiveness of Ellipsis tablets, which supports 4G networks only. Compared to other branded tablets, which need to adopt multi-mode baseband modules, Ellipsis tablets see lower production costs...
Verizon Says LTE-Advanced Features On Deck for 2015 ... First, Verizon will implement carrier aggregation, which pairs disparate spectrum bands so they act as one. For example, it will use carrier aggregation to pair LTE service on its 700MHz spectrum with its AWS spectrum. The combined spectrum (20x20Mhz channel in AWS and 10x10Mhz channel in 700MHz) will result in 30x30MHz channels. Haberman said this will help improve peak speeds, though average network speeds will remain about the same... Last, Verizon said it will introduce higher orders of MIMO (multiple in, multiple out) to LTE. Verizon's LTE devices all use 2x2 MIMO, but it may upgrade its cell towers to 4x4 MIMO to improve uplink performance. Haberman said Verizon likely won't use 4x4 MIMO on handsets, as the gains in downlink performance likely won't offset the higher cost of the handset.

Intel rolled out the industry's smallest 3G cellular modem that comes with an integrated power amplifier. The chip touts a footprint of 300mm2 footprint and targets the XMM 6255 at Internet of Things uses in areas such as healthcare monitors and advertising. OEMs often turn to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy links for IoT applications first, given their relatively high bandwidth and low power consumption... The new 65nm CMOS modem supports both 3G and 2G connections... The modem supports downlink speeds up to 7.2Mbit/s—a number Wolff called "the sweet spot... I don't think [the relatively low] data rate is a real limitation," he said. The chip uses a single antenna... Intel will support GPS and Wi-Fi links to the modem, said Will Strauss, president of market watcher Forward Concepts. Intel may be the only manufacturer to allow for multiple connectivity configurations on a small footprint, Strauss said... Intel did not release information on the modem's power specs or cost. The modem is currently shipping in modules from U-blox AG and Wolff said Intel has design wins with four other companies. Pinyon offers smart antenna tech for microstrips Posted: 01 Dec 2006
A start-up chaired by the former CEO of Apple Computer and National Semiconductor, Gil Amelio, is demonstrating a steerable smart-antenna technology that can be implemented in very small microstrips on FR4, or even on single chips. Yet Pinyon Technology Inc. will stay out of direct design and manufacturing at either level. Borrowing algorithms from the phased-array radar world, the company is showing how resonant-slot concepts can be used in giving microstrip-based antennas a typical gain of 13dBi. Multislot versions have been developed for access points and base stations, and Pinyon has even designed a single-slot antenna for handheld client platforms... The accidental discovery by Pinyon chief technology officer Forrest Brown is that resonant slots can be current-driven by embedded microstrips within FR4 board materials. In the Pinyon prototypes, slots are spaced over a quarter-wave apart in a phased array. The phased array is managed by an off-the-shelf MCU. IP pure-play Brown, who has worked with TRW, Litton and NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre, got together with former colleague Debashis Bagchi to commercialize the concept as Airwire, a low-cost, high-gain smart antenna. Bagchi previously served as CEO of residential-gateway manufacturer ShareGate Inc., and is taking the same role at Pinyon. "This time, our model is an intellectual-property pure play," he said. "We will license the microstrip IP today. We have plans for reducing this to a semiconductor substrate, but we have no interest in being a fabless chip house. It will be a licensing strategy in the future, as well."... Pinyon has implemented three versions of its design: a 7-by-6inch steerable antenna with gain above 10dBi; a 3.5-by-6inch steerable antenna with gain above 7dBi; and a passive single-element 3-by-1inch antenna for handhelds with a gain in excess of 5dBi. The largest of the three has a total BOM cost of Rs.66.46 ($1.46), including diodes, resistors, capacitors and PCB material costs. Its current consumption is less than 100mA. "The power, footprint and component-cost impact of adding the microstrip is truly negligible," Bagchi said. In the passive version, he said, the BOM is Rs.11.38 (25 cents)... In addition to Wi-Fi and WiMAX prototypes, Pinyon is developing antenna systems specific for the RFID, 3G/4G, UWB and Bluetooth markets. In many cases, the coupled microstrips can be integrated on the same chip as a power amp and low-noise amp, likely in a SiGe or GaAs process. "One of the reasons for staying away from chip implementation ourselves is to give the chip vendor and OEM the freedom to look at the RF implementations that make sense for their design," Bagchi said. The company’s big focus has been on LTE-only chipsets. By eschewing legacy 3G connectivity, Altair is able to make LTE chips that are significantly cheaper than the competition. How much cheaper? Altair was able to offer Verizon LTE chips for its inexpensive Ellipsis Android tablets for just $30, while Qualcomm chips would have been closer to the $80 to $90 range, cofounder Eran Eshad tells me. Those cheap LTE chips allow Verizon to offer the Ellipsis for free with a two-year data contract, or $250 at full price... Eshad couldn’t say how much cheaper Altair is aiming to make its chips, but he hinted that it will be “significantly” less than the $30 price of its current products.

Broadcom sought to boost its position in the business by paying $164 million last year to buy the LTE wireless chip assets of Japan's Renesas Electronics Corp.
Although Broadcom is looking to exit the baseband business, it has made strides on LTE, especially after it acquired LTE-related assets from affiliates of Renesas in September 2013. Broadcom's M320 dual-core LTE System-on-a-Chip was shipped in one Samsung Electronics tablet in the first quarter. The chip supports LTE Cat 4, with speeds of up to 150 Mbps.

Nextgen to build $100m subsea cable for gas customers May 12, 2014 Nextgen will team up with Alcatel-Lucent to build a 2000 km subsea fibre optic cable off the north West Australian coast. NextGen has emerged as the winner of a two-year tender process to connect broadband services to INPEX Ichthys Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Shell Prelude Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) projects located in the Browse Basin area. Peter McGrath, CEO of Nextgen, told iTnews the cable will be built using the Alcatel-Lucent submarine network at a cost the company predicted to exceed $100 million.... Although the cable is being built primarily for the oil and gas industry it will connect into NextGen’s existing national network through Darwin... Alcatel-Lucent had previously been awarded the contract to provide the telecommunications systems for Shell's $12 billion, 488m long and 74m wide Prelude floating vessel.

Freescale is bolstering its capabilities in such areas as home automation, the Internet of things and the cloud through the acquisition of Mindspeed Technologies' communications processor business. Freescale officials announced the deal April 7, saying the semiconductor company—which has strengths in embedded and communications processors for networking equipment—is buying Mindspeed's Comcerto CPE business. Through the acquisition, Freescale will inherit a range of multi-core embedded processors based on ARM's architecture as well as associated software, key members of the business and a top-tier global customer base.
