Eventually the disputes over what the licensees are paying and what they are obligated to pay might be submitted to binding arbitration. If the decisions went in favor of QCOM, then one possible outcome would be an order to pay up or risk termination of the licensing agreement. In that case, Apple would not be able to buy the components routinely used in its devices, nor would suppliers of these components, whether from Qualcomm directly or from other licensed manufacturers, be able to make or ship components to Apple or its device assemblers.

Apple has taken a big risk here, and it could easily backfire.
