It is rather frightening what is happening. Most people are probably ill-suited to live life without their myths reified into explicit and self-serving dogma. As religions go, Christianity has evolved over centuries to express some decent values such as humility and gratitude--which are qualities not unwelcome in our complex world of tribal and racial enmity.

Certainly, I would welcome a world where spiritual qualities are simply relevant and expected. But if religion is to be a dominant need of humanity for some decades to come, then Christians need to fight for their vision. The primitive idea of human sacrifice may be an unlikely anchor for a religion--but other religious visions are much darker--and their goals far more primitive...
