I agree. Stranger in a strange land was awesome. Another one I loved was the Thomas Covenant series by Donaldson. It started a bit slow for a few chapters but once he had drawn his characters and created the polarities (including the inner struggle of Covenant between his many opposites), it becomes a real world where the hero must learn to master his inner fears and self abnegation in order to unleash his true power. If memory serves, Donaldson was an English Professor. In any event, his mastery of words comes through on every page and this is one of the pleasures of this epic journey into fantasy. This little chat has reawakened my love of the sci-fi and fantasy genre! It is good to escape once in awhile into a great fantasy or mystery...and probably more useful than brushing your teeth with your left hand... en.wikipedia.org
