The new director has a shareholder's perspective. Blackrock owned 66,867,556 shares as of 3/31/14.

Over the years I've been to many Apple shareholder meetings and I have stood up at the microphone to ask questions and make suggestions. Back when all of Apple's directors were white, male CEOs, with the same limited perspective I stated that Apple needed more diversity on the board. I also made that point to (then) CFO Fred Anderson in a meeting to discuss ways Apple could make itself more attractive to shareholders. This was not long after Apple's board awarded Steve Jobs a $92 million dollar jet, back when that was a lot of money to Apple.

Within a year Apple added Al Gore to the board and subsequent appointments have also added more diverse perspectives.
