Appeals Court Rules for Amazon in Rovi Patent Case
Rovi's Claims Failed to Gain Traction in Other Courts

April 8, 2014 12:20 p.m. ET

A federal appeals court ruled Tuesday that Inc. doesn't infringe upon Rovi Corp.'s patents related to interactive-program guides.

The ruling is the latest rejection of Rovi's claims, which failed to gain traction in other courts. Rovi shares traded lower on the news.

Rovi sued television makers and online-video-streaming services in recent years, alleging that the companies had infringed upon certain patents.

Rovi had previously settled with Vizio Inc. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp., while it struck a license agreement with LG Electronics Inc. and Hulu LLC that resolved outstanding litigation.

Rovi had also sued Roku and Netflix Inc., but a U.S. International Trade Commission judge ruled in June last year that the companies didn't infringe on Rovi's patents.

The patents stem from 2008, when Rovi bought Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc. for $2.8 billion. At the time, Rovi was known as Macrovision Solutions Corp.
