It would really be helpful if we knew exactly why those chicks died. Mother penguins incubate the eggs, never leaving then until they hatch. They rely on the males to return and spell them so they can go in search of food. Was it that not enough males returned, and the females had to leave and find food or perish? Was the weather so cold that in their absence the chicks froze? Are the penguins in that photo hunkered down because of the biting cold? Lots of questions!
