If a third party was able to stumble on a successful formula, the Dems and Reps would instantly adopt it and cut the third party off at the knees. There's no point for a "centrist" third party. That area is already thoroughly covered by the big two. There's some purpose for experimental third parties exploring political spaces the mains can't afford to mess around in.
