uWatt Programmable Bridges Enable WLAN Connectivity Between Embedded Systems and Atheros Communications' 802.11a/b/g Chipsets

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 18, 2005--QuickLogic Corporation (NASDAQ:QUIK - News), a pioneer of Embedded Standard Products and uWatt FPGAs, announced its uWatt Programmable Bridge optimized for the Atheros Communications® (NASDAQ:ATHR - News) line of 802.11a/b/g chipsets. The QuickPCI-based bridge solution helps Atheros Communications address additional high volume markets by enabling the necessary connectivity between its PCI-based WLAN chipsets and embedded processors that do not natively support PCI. The single-chip, low-power programmable bridge is ideally suited for applications such as handheld GPS, VoWLAN PDAs, and smartphones.

In addition to the bridge, QuickLogic has developed a complete Wi-Fi connectivity solution based on Atheros Communications' AR5006XS single chip 802.11a/b/g miniPCI module. The solution includes a daughtercard that plugs seamlessly into the Intel® PXA270-based Processor Developer Kit ("Mainstone" DVK) and a complete Board Support Package (BSP) for the Linux operating system. The daughtercard connects easily into the VLIO connector of the DVK and enables the WLAN module via a miniPCI connector.

This entire design, accomplished through a close collaboration between Atheros Communications and QuickLogic, accelerates developers' time to market, while significantly reducing both development costs and project risk. Intelligent circuitry implemented in the QuickLogic Programmable Bridge provides additional power management functionality that increases system operating time, while being battery powered. QuickLogic plans to support the Windows CE and Windows Mobile operating systems in the future.

"Atheros has demonstrated clear leadership in the WLAN market by being the first to deliver a single chip 802.11a/b/g solution," says Dr. Craig Barratt, president and CEO of Atheros Communications. "QuickLogic's low power programmable interconnect solutions enable our customers to extend Wireless LAN connectivity to mobile embedded systems such as VoIP Phones, and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs)."

"Atheros Communications has experienced phenomenal adoption of its Wireless LAN technology in the personal computer and networking equipment markets," said Tom Hart, QuickLogic's chairman, president and CEO. "We look forward to enabling designers of mobile embedded systems to reap the many benefits of Atheros' innovative single chip WLAN devices."
