Recentely, several sector fads (security, nanotechnology, fuel cells, etc.) have swept through the markets with strong volatility spikes. While this is nothing new, enormous opportunities have been created on both the long and short side.

The purpose of this thread is to discuss sudden surges of interest and activity in sectors, sub-sectors and small groups of stocks.

Questions to discuss might include: how long will these fads run? what news is driving them? when are the best opportunities on the long and short side? which stocks have long-term potential? which stocks will fall the hardest when the fads run their course?
