Dear Silicon Investor Members:

As many of you know, we recently terminated the membership of Anthony@Pacific for Terms of Use violations. It was an extremely difficult decision, considering Anthony's popularity within the community. As I stated in my original announcement regarding this matter, our dedication to the Silicon Investor community is our prime directive, and the SI Terms of Use have served us well in this regard.

In the past couple weeks, I have received several messages (public and private) regarding Anthony's termination. Many members reinforced our original decision, and I appreciate that support. Several members, however, urgently requested Anthony's return. Those requests typically included one of the following two types of messages:

Type #1 - Bryan, You're a complete moron! Who the hell put you in charge!?!? You'll regret this decision until your dying day.

Type #2 - Bryan, I understand why you did what you did, but I hope you'll reconsider. Anthony has made a meaningful contribution in my life through Silicon Investor, and I don't want that to be lost.

Moron or not, I can sympathize with the folks who sent the second type of message. The question we've been struggling with is, "What's best for the community?" Or, to put it another way, "Is Silicon Investor better off with or without Anthony as a member?" The bottom line is that it's a tough call.

Then, we hit upon a (potentially) brilliant idea: "We can let the community decide!" Of course, this thing could completely backfire in our faces, but we hope not. In any case, to our knowledge, it's never been done before on the Web, and we're always willing to try new things. So, here's the deal.

This thread has been started as an open discussion for members to express opinions and arguments for or against reinstating Anthony@Pacific's membership. Each member may place one vote by sending a Private Message to A@PVote.

<<Click A@P Vote link above to access Private Messaging.>>

Important Note: Only votes sent via PM to the A@PVote profile will be counted, so don't send your votes to me or Jill or Bob.

Your vote PM should simply contain a YES or NO vote:
- YES - If you think Silicon Investor will be better off by letting Anthony back on.
- NO - If you think Silicon Investor is better off without him.

If you want to make a case one way or the other, please make it on this thread.

Neither Go2Net nor Anthony@Pacific will participate in the discussion on this thread, although we will allow Anthony to post one reply to this initial message. We will perform the mechanics of the post for him, since as of now, his termination still stands.

We will accept votes on this matter between October 4 and October 8, 1999. We will tally the votes and post our final decision on Monday, October 11.

We welcome your thoughts and comments on this process. In fact, if this works well, and it's something that members seem to enjoy, then we'll consider a similar "community appeals" process as a part of ongoing Terms of Use enforcement.

Sincerely,

Bryan A. Burdick
Managing Director
Silicon Investor
