That all concerns only pre-existing, locked in Apple people.

But, as far as I can tell, the price of AAPL can go up only if new, up to now non-Apple people buy the iPhone.

Now, if they wanted the iPhone as is, they would already have gotten it. Right?

Meanwhile, people who have never had an iPhone, now have a killer Samsung toy to look at, and maybe buy, before the iPhone 5 comes out, you know, later...

Is the timing of the new release as important as when peoples' contracts expire so they can purchase a newer model at the subsidized price?

People's contracts are always expiring. Perhaps a higher percentage in the Christmas quarter but it isnt a huge difference....and it is likely even less meaningful in Asia.

Seems the only people that buy other things are people that need something right now and want bigger screens and LTE.
I only know of 1 person that went that way the rest of my friends are waiting for their cheap upgrades and whatever Apple releases.

LTE and the larger screen are probably the biggest points of differentiation. Apple will remove the LTE gap in the iPhone 5 and I am crossing my fingers that the 5 will also have a larger screen.
