Gary Patton, VP of SRDC at IBM, gave the first keynote with prognostication on the kind of technology development that is in the pipeline beyond traditional CMOS scaling.

I worked for Patton ( then a first level mgr.)for about 2 years in the early 90s at IBM developing a BiCMOS process as a hedge against the move from Bipolar to CMOS in mainframe design. The move to all CMOS was in fact a bit delayed to the point that IBM lost quite a bit of mainframe business to Hitachi for about one generation. However by the .25um CMOS generation, they gained it all back and much more as bipolar could not compete in cost, power, or performance. Patton, a Stanford PhD is smart, pragmatic, and a likable guy. Easy to see how fast he moved up in management

Mobile networks require about 1 server for every 600 phones

If one can get $400-600/phone that makes the math simple as to which business to be in.

Will Fab 8 not be doing 28nm?

GLOBALFOUNDRIES in Malta, NY is currently running 32nm production and 20nm full flow qualification.
