Lets see... 1000 X 1000 = 1 million sq meters per sq kilometer X 200 = 200 million sq meters per the story.

Assuming 15% panel efficiency, solar noon, clear sky that would be about 150 watts generated per sq meter.

200 million X 150 = 30,000 million watts.

30 Gigawatts.

Yup... their math is off.

Allowing for actual efficiencys their numbers look pretty close. Feel free to correct me if my math is wrong.


Edit: The actual ground fill in (amount of ground occupied by the panels would be roughly 1/2 to 2/3rds of the area).

In that case we get 15 to 20 Gigawatts.

So 10 Gigawatt harvest at solar noon actually looks good by my rough calculation.
