I do not understand your reason for pointing out that that article was written in May of 2009. Indeed it was, on my political weblog. I occasionally resurrect it, with additions or deletions, for Memorial Days that follow. Your reason for pointing that out?

In this article I posted here today I stated:

On a campaign stint in early 2008, the soon-to-be first lady of theUnited States declared that ‘for the first time in her adult life’ she is now proud of her country.

This is, word for word, what she said in February of 2008:

‘And let me tell you something … for the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country.’

In what way does omitting the word ‘really’ take her statement out of context? Look at her quote verbatim. Is that statement acceptable to you, as coming from the mouth of the wife of the leader of the free world?

Michelle Obama was born in 1964. I would assume that, during her schooling, she learned about the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and the visionary work and unimaginable sacrifices that would follow that courageous action. Or Washington’s victories at Trenton and Yorktown. Or the ratifying of the U.S. Constitution -- the most magnificent blueprint for governance ever devised by the mind of man. Or the Lewis and Clark Expeditions reaching the Pacific. Or the Emancipation Proclamation. Or what American troops did when they stormed the beaches at Normandy. Or the American moon landing. Or the fall of the Berlin Wall. Or the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. Or the invention of the reaper … the cotton gin … the telephone … the light bulb … the telegraph … the personal computer. Or the assembly line. Or the Wright Brothers’ pioneering work. Or the building of the Panama Canal.

I believe Michelle Obama’s ludicrous statement illustrates her and her husband’s consistent belief that they, and their cadre of agenda-driven leftists, are somehow a cut above the rest of us, and they therefore have the special calling to determine how we should live -- that America’s foundations are in need of re-defining, and reconstructing in the image of the president’s own political leanings. That belief is evident in virtually all of the policies this president has attempted to force down the throats of Americans – from Cap and Trade to Obamacare, and the hundreds of policy abominations that lie somewhere in between.

Here’s a final quote made by Michelle at roughly the same time the other one was. It may be the best example of the Obamas’ view of the American people as simple, lazy, ignorant peons, desperately in need of an enlightened Barack to pull them out of the hole they have dug for themselves.

Barack Obama will require you to work. He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism. That you put down your division. That you come out of your isolation. That you move out of your comfort zones. That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage. Barack will never allow you to do back to your lives as usual: uninvolved, uninformed.

Michelle Obama recently gave a commencement address at a college in North Carolina. I happened to hear part of her speech on CSpan. She gave her usual call students to work to serve others, not just chase material well-being. She spoke well. She has learned to broaden the call to include private charities as well as government work. She spoke hagiographically of the Civil Rights struggles of the 1960s, speaking, as she usually does, as if they were still going on today, same as back then -- which is what I think she really believes. The curious thing, to any observer, is that this woman has seen her husband be elected President of the United States, yet it has made no dent in her world-view that the US is an irredemiably racist place. What Original Sin is to Christians, American Racism is to Michelle Obama.
