Their culture is moving backwards and apparently by choice.

As bad as the Muslim culture is, it had the further misfortune to have it's most backward part of the culture get the oil money. This meant the Wahhabi/Salafi culture has been running the Sunni Mosques. When the Shah tried to modernize, his most Mullahs got rid of him. Same thing almost happened to the House of Saud and they had to back down and sell out to their Mullahs.
