Politicians are not the people to look to for high ethical standards. That is why we are better off when non-politicians are willing to serve we should consider allowing them.

Senator Santorum was following the lead of the leader of the party who wanted Specter rather than risking Toomey losing the general election. Toomey was a far more acceptable candidate to non-loonies, but he was not certain to win in November.
