A couple of hundred billion is all it would take. Now, that is a fair chunk of change, but it pales in comparison to what we've spent on the war to date. And that money would open up the rest of the solar system to us, end our energy concerns for more than a century if not longer, and give us a way to deal with the low probability of of a comet or asteroid strike on the Earth.
