My theory on why CMGI does not rise and fall as sharply as the other Internet stocks is that their business model is too complicated to easily be put into one stock category or another. They are both an Internet company and a Venture Capital company at the same time. I think the venture capital piece makes them much too risky for the average joe conservative investor.
That way I think of it is that CMGI is a mutual fund of Internet stocks. Like other Mutual Funds, they do not fluctuate like stocks but the long term growth can be significant.
