I don't understand the value of this 10% IPO to current EMC shareholders. If it doesn't enhance the EMC shareholder; why the sudden run-up on the announcement? Surely the Goldman Sach's buy recommendation isn't worth a 6% single day move in the shares.

they are funding vmware expansion while maintaining control. They say they will return part of the cost of vmware purchase to shareholders. wall street likes the shifting of assets--money--Emc has been viewed as stale financially. this helps to change that perception.

I am thinking the IPO indicates the true value of the asset?? If it is so, then the 90% EMC still has is quite valuable. jdn

Yes, if you are correct. But the q is how much hot air is lifting the IPO or was the price set artificially high.

Damned if I know. I just happen to think EMC is a great company, with a great product, decent management and financially secure. With those facts in hand, I just hang on and HOPE. jdn

This is what Businessweek thinks:

EMC wants to exploit companies' appetite for so-called virtualization by selling 10% of VMware's shares in an initial public offering planned for June or July. If successful, the IPO could generate cash for future growth, give EMC 90% ownership in a new company worth perhaps $10 billion, and help EMC boost the price of its own shares by buying back more stock.

This just reinforces the objective of creating as much added value with software. The tight integration of software and hardware with its consequent ease of use is very appealing to customers.
