I personally don't believe in most TA, save for some obvious
"basing" ideas. So I see no real difference between "Meaningful, detailed discussions of TA" and barking "SELL!". In the former case, we have long-winded voo-doo like utterances leading to a buy or sell signal

One needs to realize that if you are an "investor" who buys shares of a stock (hopefully based because of good fundementals) and goes along for the ride, then you really don't need TA. But those of us who like to tinker and has more influence on things the TA helps. As I noted in prior posts, the majority of people on these threads are FA buy and holders that have a small knowledge of TA and dicussions of such are of little value. What is disturbing to me is that a goood percentage of those that hype things by "using TA" really don't know what they are talking about. My experience is that the good TA'ers don't hype things and have little to say.

Bottem line is know what type of investor you are and use the tools out there to make your own decisions.

IMHO

Todd,
I sincerely appreciate all your effort posting your opinions on THQI. I have a question that is off-topic and am posting it here since your e-mail address is unavailable. Namely: my son wants to start investing (in a very small way compared to the involvement of most contributors to SI) and I am trying to help him. The question is which stock to begin with. I initially thought of INTC but then got to thinking that THQI could be more interesting and possibly more rewarding in the next 6 to 12 months. At any rate I would appreciate your thoughts. You may e-mail (vince@etgs.com) your answer so as not to take up time on this thread and bore other members. Thank you.
Vince

I am not sure if I want to jump for joy or cry my eyes out. I went to my usual TRUS (this is my 3rd Xmas season checking THQ games) As some of you know, I have stated that this particular store was not a very good store for video games. The store video aisle was JAM PACKED like I have NEVER seen it before. It was unbelieable!!!! Those that know me, know that I do not hype. WCW NWO I marked 43 WCW NWO late last Saturday. This afternoon I went
for a followup. ALL WERE GONE!!! It hurts me to see the shelf empty with all those people in the aisle. ( 007 and Inlt. soccer were also sold out.) But, I am also ecstatic at what I have seen in this store!!! This was unprecedented!! Anyway, we know that THQ keeps inventory tight. Missing a day or two sales here and there are better than sitting on 100,000 copies that will not sell.... ouch. I vote for THQ's strategy.
Here is an update since last Sat. In each case, I will indicate the minimum number of games that sold, based on the tags I marked.

WCW NWO I marked 43 tags, all gone today. There may have been refills during the
week. So, at the minimum 43 games sold.

Playstation
Bravo At least 4 sold
WCW World At least 11 sold. 9 on the shelf.
VS 8tags last week and 8 this week. Hmmm not selling here?
Ghost finally in stock with 8 tags

Genesis
Madden 98 at least 7 sold and marked down to $39.99
NHL 98 at least 7 sold, this is not selling as well as I thought at this store.
NBA 98 there were 2 tags last Sat. and 9 today. I would guess at least 5 sold
Pinochio zero sold

SNES
Bowling 1 sold
madden 98 5 on the shelf, this is new since last Sat.
College Football 1 sold
Olympics 1 sold, 4 left
Super Empire 3 sold, this one is in a crappy location on the end and bottom shelf
Super Jedi 3 sold and same as above , crappy location.

GameBoy
Everything selling like crazy!!!
Toy Story at least 5 sold, no tix on the shelf
Pocohontas at least 5 sold, 3 tix left
Super Jedi at least 4 sold, 0 tix
Lion King at least 4 sold, 3 tix left
Taz last sat. I marked 2 tix and today those were gone and 5 new on the
shelf. So, at least 2 sold and probably more.
NHL and NBA 96 zero, probably not getting more of these. Please no more. it is 1998
in 2 weeks.
JungleBook at least 6 sold
Alladin forgot to check this one last week. i marked 4 tags today.
Herculaes also forgot about this one. I marked 9 tags.

I marked tags today with people all around. I don't need my wife shield anymore. I dont care. I have important research to do. (g) Anyone that thinks store checks are "only fun and games" has got to be kidding. This is GREAT information. It tells me Thq is kicking ass this quarter!!!!

For your weekend reading pleasure, you may want to get Barron's (12/22/97) at the local newsstand. The front page lead-in reads "Sony and Broderbund both look like winners." Nice read.

Vince:

You addressed your question to Todd, but pardon me for responding...
I "sold" 17 shares of my THQI stock to my 12 year old son (no commissions). He plunked the money on the counter (it was all he had). He's thrilled with his investment so far. Already, the stock has appreciated by about 25%. Over Christmas vacation, I plan to introduce him to some of the economics behind successful companies (some of it drawn from comments made by Todd on this thread).

I plan to teach him about the benefits of investments and how the approach to small but steady appreciation differs from speculation and the risks that brings. It'll lead me to some teaching about he pitfalls of gambling and the concept of compounding.

I wish you all the best as you endeavor to teach your children. Have a blessed Christmas.

Regards,

Jerry

To All-

I saw a report on TV this morning about children in Japan who were hospitalized after watching cartoons on television. Although it had nothing to do with video games, there can be quilt by association. Something everyone should monitor. It could create a buying opportunity. I know I may be called an alarmist, but if this problem is not explained (medicaly) quickly; it will cause some excess speculation.

There is little mystery medically about what happened. It has long been known that lights flashed at a certain frequency can induce epileptic seizures. I first learned about in in the mid '60s. This cartoon was described as having an eye flashing light at the viewer. This should have no effect on THQ or its games.

Andrew, you are being an alarmist. There is no relation between the carton in Japan and video games in the states. The carton in Japan was some sort of
Japanese Animae not seen here in the states. Believe me, a non issue.
