ironROD: Thank you for the report. From some of the interviews I heard in CNN-fn, I gather that it is practically impossible for the LD carriers to get into the local markets preventing competition vitiating the spirit of telecom act. Supreme court decision on this subject will be very significant I hope AT&T/MCI/Govt. prevail in this appeal

Patrick,

BTY is certainly up there and rumers abound....

biz.yahoo.com

Shares in British Telecommunications Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: BT.L) leapt to a record high on Thursday in heavy trade on bid talk and defensive buying amid continued Asian turbulence, analysts said.

Bid speculation swirled around the telecoms sector, with talk of U.S. giant AT&T (T - news) or one of the U.S. regional Bell telephone companies possibly considering a British link-up, but analysts said domestic factors were mainly behind BT's rise.

Luc,

It's good to hear from you again. IMHO asian worries are driving investors to look for a temporary haven in telecom stocks. Because of the WCOM merger, MCI appears to have come out on top over Sprint and AT&T. Even BTY is lower now than its close yesterday. This may change as some say the asain market will pump back up in a month or two as the bailout plan shows some results.

Its a nice ride now!! I hope it stays!

Mark,
Good to see you back, assuming your account also is full again of MCIC. This has been a safe haven so far from all the asian crap, wish I could say that of all my stocks. I also think a few upgrades by brokerages helped and perhaps there is now a feeling this deal will fly without too many problems.

Ted,

Thanks for the note.ÿ I have re-purchased MCIC shares over the last month.ÿ The Asian scare had me wondering if I had made the correct decision to sell MCIC on DEC 9th, and go with PNOPX. So, on JAN 1st, I sold all of the PNOPX (after taking the yearly dividend) and made a move back to MCIC at a slightly lower price than what I sold it for.ÿ The net result of the sell to PNOPX and then back to MCIC was only slight gain until about 3 weeks ago.ÿ Now it seems that everyone is looking for security from Asian related techstocks - it appears that telecom stocks are not as vulnerable, at least in the short term, as they are.ÿ Regardless - the overall maneuvers have left my 401K a little fatter than I expected!ÿ I'm hoping that MCIC can hold the ground it's gained by virtue of the merger with WCOM and the future merger price.

What are your thoughts on it?

Mark,
I was calculating some percentages all hypothetical as to what I might receive in WCOM stock. Then I was calculating my cost basis at those estimates and I could increase the number of my shares easily by 50%-65% and have a cost basis under $20 on the new stock if prices don't change much from now.
That alone makes this a great investment if it goes through, but there isn't too many safer places to be than here right now.

MCIC & MSFT have been team players for many years. It is very possible MSFT stands out as the forth bidder for MCIC. At least, MSFT may interested in the satellite slot that MCI bought two years ago. I think MSFT to bid for MCIC make a great sense. MSFT is trying to push its webTV into residental houses. To have a US long distance telephone company to make it come true is the best way to compete with ORCL's NCs. MSFT has the cash and MCIC has the energy. It will create a new generation company for 21th centry.
