I used to be a chain smoker, then I tapered off to "heavy". I cut back a lot in my late 30s, and quit when I was 40.....

Shortly after I quit, my mother had a (mercifully) mild stroke, and I had to stay in Washington for about a month taking care of my brother with cerebral palsy. I decided that if I didn't pick up a cigarette then, I had no excuse for doing so ever again.....

I took care of my Dad the last 6 months as he was dying of lung cancer.

Thankfully I had been sufficiently "motivated" well before then.

That'll do it for you. My mother quit (she was about 30) after her grandfather died of emphysema. Visiting him in the hospital and seeing him struggle to smoke even as his was choking to death was too horrible......
