Yes, Chambers discussion of telco market will be short term pivitol for tech sector. I'm as interested in what he says about stock option plans and using CSCO's cash hoard for other purposes like dividends or massive share buybacks. I'd like to see less agressive (greedy looking) option plans that track performance and aren't adjusted with stock price changes.. and leave the cash hoard alone. When the time comes there's nothing like dollars to exert leverage.

Noticed GLW got taken down on an up day! I thought other operations were supposed to protect that company from the fiber optic backlash.

Hi Mattie, nice to see you here. Why do you think Chambers is resigning? Is that rumor or selling news viewership? I believe CSCO is on a reporting calendar that makes Sept their normal time to sign off.

Hey Jim,

Not Chambers but the CFO..I forget his name. They floated the trial baloon last week with a rumor. He is 60 and has expressed interest in retireing in the past - we'll see if it comes out on the call.

And you are right that Sept is the correct date to sign off, but I think the street wanted it earlier (anyway that was the story last week).

Jim,

What did you think of CSCO's qtr? Looks like they were light on Revenue and still using pro forma for earnings (which means you can't trust it)...also they refuse to expenses stock options (I know was one of your points).

I think the refusal to expense options and use of pro-forma is key. I don't think they would be profitable if they expensed options and used GAAP - but I did not run the numbers so don't hold me to it.

Also - CFO did resign. They leaked it last week.

Rally on rumour of Fed easing. I don't think it's going to
happen as the problem right now is not the level of interest
rates as opposed to a crisis of confidence in the stock
market system.

CSCO beat by 2 cents after the close. Light on rev though.
Guides to flat to modest growth.

TECHNICAL RALLY! (IT’S UP TO CISCO WHETHER IT CONTINUES TOMORROW)
By Harry Boxer, The Technical Trader (www.thetechtrader.com)

It was a stellar day for most of the day with the market gapping up on pre-opening futures being strongly higher. The market then paused, exploded to a secondary move and then went into a rising flag formation for most of the day.

The market reached its peak with about an hour to go, and at that point we started a pullback consolidation that held till about 30 minutes to go, then the market got hit hard into the close. This was due to a combination of profit-taking and some cautious selling into the Cisco earnings coming out after the close.

Net on the day the Dow was up 231 points, but some 130 off the high. The S&P was up 25 but closed 15 points off the high. The Nasdaq Composite was 20 points off the high but still was up 53, and the Nasdaq 100 closed at 902, up 45, but was as high as nearly 924.

The indices may also have reacted to their overhead declining 40-day moving averages. When they reached there they started their sell-off. That added fuel to the fire on the downside. However, a little bit of late short covering in the last five minutes firmed prices up just a tad.

Net on the day it was still a terrific day. The up/down volume and advance-declines technicals were very strong, despite the sell-off, with nearly 2400 up on New York and only 830 down. Up/down volume was 1.2 billion up, 260 million down. That’s about a 5-1 ratio. Nasdaq was similar, more like 24-10 advance-declines. Advancing volume was 1.3 billion, declining was 166 million, a very strong positive ratio there of 8 to 1.

A review of my board showed that every stock I follow was up today, most of them up between 1 and 3 points, led by QLogic up 3.17 and at one point up 4 ½. Amgen was up another + 2, holding near the high end of the range for the day. Some other stocks of note were eBay up 1.92 and IBM up 1.91.

It was a very broad advance today and I was very pleased with what I saw. The market backed off, as I said, dramatically and did not close well, and that was the one fly in the ointment for today. Tomorrow if Cisco’s earnings are good, I expect the market to rally back up. If not, we may come down hard again.

We are obviously not out of the woods yet, and today may have been nothing more than another technical snap back rally. However, I was certainly expecting it and as a result thetechtrader.com web site had the most profitable day in its history, so I’m very pleased with that.

Good trading!

Harry

On Tuesday, the Nasdaq gapped higher and after a brief pullback, rallied nicely in early trading. It then generally worked its way higher throughout the day. Finally, it sold off going into the close but still managed to close well.

The S&P also put in a decent day.

So what do we do? As you know, one day does not make a bottom. The long-term trend still remains down. However, there's no need to fight it shorter-term--let's see if it can follow through. This is not to say that you should run out in pick bottoms in "one-day wonders" such as the semis. Stick with the few issues that have performed well and appear to be attempting to bottom. Biotech (see below) and to a lesser extent major drugs (which many will need as this bear market continues to linger) are about the only sectors that fit this category. As always, make sure you wait for entries and trail a stop just in case.

Looking to potential setups, biotech reversed Monday's sell off. This action suggests its low-level cup and handle remains intact. Therefore, continue to look to nibble in the Ishares (BBH or IBB).

Best of luck with your trading on Wednesday!

Updated 8/6 for Wednesday's market.
Key DOW Levels for 8/7
UP Current Trend
DN Below 8,200

Break and Rally
Dow breaks trend line to upside, rallies 200-plus points. Watch for signs of a continuation.

From yesterday's commentary, "...looking at the 15 Minute Chart, you see that the Dow has now formed a clear upper trend line across the highs of the current three-day downmove. Since the upper trend line is quite well-formed, there is a great possibility for an upside break tomorrow at 8,100. An upside break of the trend line will likely lead to a nice move higher...."
The Dow got the explosive upside break of the upper trend line at 8,100 right at today's Open and even rallied as high as 8,400 before pulling back some just before the Close. The Dow still managed to end the day higher by 230 points, but it's somewhat difficult to tell what tomorrow's likely direction will be.

The fact that the index was able to rally a great deal after the upside break makes the index moderately bullish, especially if it can hold above the upper trend line. However, as we've seen lately, many of the recent rallies have made for better selling opportunities.

Tomorrow we want to see signs that the index can hold on to today's gains. That is, we want to see the index form a higher low above the upper trend line, preferrably above 8,200. If this occurs, we will likely see the index trade higher. Further, looking at the Daily Chart shows that the index could be forming a higher low above 8,000, which would further imply a move higher.

On the flip side, the 60 Minute Chart shows the beginnings of a lower high formation. Lower highs typically imply a move lower, therefore, we will definitely keep a careful eye on this pattern. Essentially, the 8,200 level is theone to watch on Wednesday.

Short Term Dow

Short term, the Dow has retraced to nearly 50% Retracement from yesterday's low to today's high, seen in the 5 Minute Chart. The 50% retracement value is 8,225, therefore, we will watch this level for a downside break, and 8,325 to the upside for Short term direction at the Open.

Medium Term Dow

In the medium term, we covered our Short position at the Open at 8,185 to cap off a nice 330 point gain in our latest position. We then entered Long at 8,255 and are still Long there. We will hold our stop at the entry for tomorrow's trading. We will go Short below 8,200, and Long above 8,325, with 25 point stops.

NASDAQ & OEX (SP 100)

The NASDAQ and OEX each got strong upside breaks today and rallied for much of the day. For tomorrow, we want to see if the indexes can hold on to today's big gains in the form of a higher low or a consolidation at the highs. *

Summary

The Dow got the big upside break of the upper trend line this morning, which sent the index soaring to begin the day. We covered our Short position this morning for a nice 330 point gain and are now Long from 8,255, with stops at the entry. Since the index then sold off late in the day, we are in a watch and see mode at 8,200. We see a possible higher low formation above 8,200. Watch 8,200 down, and 8,325 up tomorrow.

Thanks for listening, and Good luck in your trading..
