I do agree that splits are silly. I also agree that Apple's Board must be quite confident about future growth to take this action with the stock trading in the low 80s.

Allen,

Agreed. It is almost universally recognized that splits in and of themselves do not add value. However (and it is a pretty big "however"), splits are often/usually interpreted as a sign of management's confidence in the future. If so, that does add value--and, I suspect, is what happened today.

40% of pc users willing to try a mac in one survey. Even if the numbers are a fraction of this, it could be an interesting year for apple. Maybe apple was seeing some of the same numbers which is the reason they came out with the mini.

>>Is it a throwback to the early days<<it used to cost more in brokerage commissions to if you didn't buy a "round lot." You paid more if you bought less than a hundred shares, if I remember correctly. Some of that thinking may still linger too. One-hundred also has a nice ring to it, don't you agree? ;)

don't be such a sourpuss

Nothing has changed, since I first bought Apple my main interest and now only interest in Apple is whether they can regain ground in their market share PERIOD!

So far Apple has been unsuccessful in this most important area and for me everything else is secondary.

When Apple surpasses reaches 5% let me know.

Don….IMO it couldn’t be any clearer, given the fact 74.4% of AAPL stock is owned by Institutional Investors believing, as do I, AAPL has the potential to improve their market share PERIOD!

The time is right, and Jobs knows it. The split announcement today, IMO, was a message he’ll fill the iPod and Mac mini back orders (exceeding their forecast) for Q2, easily beat the street again and improve market share.

In addition, Q3 and Q4 will have Tiger Dollars and whatever else he has up his sleeve.

If the market holds up, AAPL will too.

Which is it to be, Don? "Surpasses" or "reaches"? Or would you prefer "trashes Dell"? Till then, have a good snooze. I'm sure someone here will trumpet any of the above if and when ;-)

Apple has always had the potential to increase it's market share but so far has been unable to do it. At best they have been able to slow their market share decline, nothing so far has changed that. So far buying consumer media players doesn't translate to buying Macs.

Apple reaching 5 Percent PC market share would be a huge event. But I will believe it when other than Apple states it. Since Jobs hasn't predicted it anytime soon, it isn't happening.

Don...Do The Math, the anecdotal evidence is surfacing more the past couple of months than ever before.

I redirect you to Neal’s earlier post today referencing X-bit's Anton Shilov's article reporting 40% of PC Enthusiasts Would Consider Mac as Second Computer. "A significant part of PC users would consider buying an Apple computer as their second computer provided that it is stylish and affordable, says a recent poll by X-bit labs website oriented towards PC enthusiasts. The results outline growing popularity of products by Apple Computer.”

All that AAPL has to accomplish is to double their present market share.
