Apple acqui-hired the team from messaging assistant Init.ai to work on Siri

Earlier this week, a small startup called Init.ai announced that it soon would be
discontinuing its service — a smart assistant for customer representatives to
parse and get better insights from their interactions with users, as well as auto-
mate some of the interactions — because the team was (according to a notice
on the site) “joining a project that touches the lives of countless people across
the world.” TechCrunch has now learned what that project is: the team is joining
Apple.

They are becoming a part of the group working on Siri, Apple’s own personal
assistant that uses voice-based commands and natural language to answer
questions, control your phone and more.

Apple releases a fix for LTE connectivity issues with new Apple Watch

The release notes of watchOS 4.0.1 are quite straightforward: “watchOS 4.0.1
fixes issues that in rare cases were causing Apple Watch to join unauthenticated
(captive) Wi-Fi networks, such as those found in public places like coffee shops
and hotels, which direct the user to a webpage before the network can be
accessed,” Apple wrote.

Microsoft Built a New Web Browser for iPhones and Android Devices

There's a brand new web browser heading to Apple's App Store and
Google Play, and it's coming from a seemingly unlikely source. Microsoft --
yes, Microsoft -- is getting ready to launch its Edge browser for the iPhone,
iPad, and Android devices.

Interesting. Considering how many people I've seen complain about Microsoft Edge on the Computer Learning thread, I wonder how it'll fare on iOS.

I've never even installed another browser on my iOS devices, I've found using Safari with an ad blocker to be plenty sufficient for my needs. I do have several browsers installed on my Mac though.

6 Years Later, 6 Charts That Show How Far
Apple, Inc. Has Come Since Steve Jobs' Passing

It was six years ago today that Apple ( NASDAQ:AAPL) co-founder
Steve Jobs passed away after losing a very public battle with
pancreatic cancer. In the years since Jobs' untimely death, CEO
Tim Cook has made his mark on Apple in numerous ways, including
transforming it into a much more shareholder-friendly company that
communicates better with investors and returns copious amounts
of capital through share buybacks and dividends.

Cook tweeted out a remembrance this morning for his former
friend and colleague.

Apple vs. Samsung doesn't need Supreme Court redo, DOJ says

Samsung in March asked the Supreme Court to review another aspect
of the case, a 2014 verdict that awarded Apple $120 million for patent
infringement. Apple filed its own response in May, arguing that the high
court doesn't need to look at the matter -- an assessment with which
the Justice Department agrees.

Ohio State will give every incoming freshman an iPad Pro

Back to school shopping just got way easier for freshmen enrolling
at Ohio State next fall.

The school announced on Wednesday that every incoming freshman
will be supplied with an iPad Pro, Apple Pencil, and Apple keyboard
case starting in 2018 as part of a new partnership with Apple. The
iPads will be paid for from funds from Ohio State's "administrative
efficiency program."

At retail prices, an iPad Pro starts at $599, and the keyboard case
costs $159.

Ohio State's new program is called Digital Flagship University, and
it includes a new lab opening in 2018 at Ohio State's main Columbus
campus dedicated to iOS development using Swift, Apple's
programming language.

It should be pointed out that Apple DID NOT devise this program
for the 7K freshman in an attempt to get people to count better,
there being 14 schools in the Big Ten.
