Hey Mat,

Good to hear from you again. Sorry 'bout the bum deal. Have you tried the mail order houses? What's the situation with getting one through that route?

Here's a link or two to get you started if it will help.

I like the one called Small Dog Electronics. Good prices. No G3's though.

Going to bed. Good luck!

Bollinger Bands (20 day average) are tightening @ 21 (David, how does the 20 day avg compare to
your 34 calc?)

On my 34 day chart the tightest point was at the end of April and since then we moved up from the moving average itself to the upper Bollinger band. We look like zig-zagging along between the MA and the upper Bollinger Band in the near future. Within a week or two my alternative Bollinger Band could coincide with the classic calculation. Then I predict a big move. Unfortunately it could be on the downside (market crash/correction).

Have a look on my chart on my website what happened when earnings were released last October.

Fundamentally I see AAPL worth $38 if we have the patience to wait. More if profits are further upgraded.

Does this mean i am paying import duty of %40 or am i being ripped off by Apple Australia.

The wholesale tax is 22%. Maybe there is also a tariff but it's not more than 5% and probably less.

Looking forward to that 10% GST if Labor ever let us get it.....

Dennis,

Well, I just started options several months ago and never lost. The
total returns have exceeded 1000%. I gave away more than 50% of
profits to the needed. As I said before, this is just for fun.
With very samll amount to start with, I really never worry about if
I lose the game. Luckily, the trend seems always to be on my side.
I think Apple is still a good stock to play options. Before MacWorld
and Q3 reports arrive in July, the options of July Calls are
attractive for the time being. The disadvantage of playing options
is its light daily volume and harder to unload on your requested
price. Therefore, options always have to be sold at the rally to
get the maximum returned value. I am still very new in options
and still believe holding stocks is the best way to win big eventually.

WWDC Quick Takes.

When I first heard Jobs presentation on Monday, I came to two quick but disparate conclusions:

1) That AAPL had "nailed" it with regards to shoring up their existing corps of developers. Baby would *not* be thrown out with bathwater and all the current Mac installed based would be able to upgrade to an industrial strength UNIX/NT OS while retaining their beloved apps and ease of use. Great focus and headline.

That the new OS would require(??) a G3* would mean more consumers would go out and buy iMacs and Powerbooks. Lots of upgrading, more CPU sales, balloning revenues, accelerating stock price.

Yaaayy!

2) On the other hansd, conspicuously, there was no mention of either:

a) an OS to run on Intel boxes or;

b) a non-emulation means by which to run Windows apps on Mac hardware.

Ie; where's the convergence? That and the emphasis on G3s pounding Pentiums into the pavement left me with the distinct impression that (negotiations with MSFT had collapsed and that) AAPL was going full bore into a *proprietary* mode and were going to gut it out with Intel in a hardware battle and do a rollover for MSFT on the software side.

This I thought is extremely ballsy/cowardly move on Jobs' part. While a hardware strategy not undoable given AAPL's excellent product line, it did signal to me a clearly more *dangerous* strategy.

Aaaahhh!

And since my options had only a few days left ...

Anyway, I've since been going through reports on continuation of Yellow Box as part of OSX and the continued implementation of Rhapsody as a server OS, so my concerns have been considerably addressed.

*I'm unclear if Jobs said OSX will *require* a G3. I remember in January '97 Amelio *guaranteed* that any new Next-based OS would run on any of the Mac *then* current 603-604s. Can anyone answer this?

Don't know the answer, but share the concern, since I know our
large Mac installation would be very upset as an Apple customer if
this promise were not kept. I think Apple would be open to a
class action suit, similar to the one they lost on promised upgrades.
Of course, Jobs didn't say require, but did say that they would
guarrantee it would run on all currently shipping systems. Hmmmpf,
why believe that, since that is exactly what they said about
Rhapsody last year?

Apple needs to clarify this soon.

Soup,

I'm not completely clear on this one either. The ubiquitous Don Crabb says that OS X will require a G3 FWIW.

X-R , Soup , Bob - here's AAPL's White Paper on "Carbon"

developer.apple.com

I would defer any development/conversion projects until the WWDC is concluded , and AAPL issues a White Paper on Mac OS 10 .

Regards,
Jim K.
PS: Have read that Mac OS 10 is "optimized" for the G3 leading to the "assumption" it works on other PowerPCs - no certainty yet though

Below is an excerpt from Realities report. Jobs said Mac OS X would be "directed" at the G3 which would lead me to believe "optimized". I don't think anyone knows yet.

Likewise, all the reports on Rhapsody as a continuing program are logically inconsistent both with what Jobs said and with descriptions of OS X. OS X is Rhapsody according to Jorg Brown with a "Grey" box (Carbon) added. Why would you continue two OS's one with grey, one without. Makes little sense. Jobs seemed pretty clear that Rhapsody 1.0 would be the last since OS X is Rhapsody 1.0 but who knows at this point.

Jorg Brown's view of a yellow, grey and blue box (To run existing Mac OS apps) seems very ungainly. Does that mean that you will have to run various apps in different environmental windows as per the original blue and yellow boxes? Does this mean essentially 3 slightly different user interfaces as per original blue and yellow? Does this mean no drag and drop between different environmental windows - only cut and paste? If any of these are the case Mac OS X is not suitable for the average user. My impression from the speech was it would be a unified environment but I'm not sure now and I doubt anyone else on this thread is any better informed.

MacOS 10 G3 Only?
Will MacOS 10 (MacOS X) be G3 only? Sorry to say, but it looks like it from what Steve had to say. However, MacOS 8.x/9.x with the Carbon libraries (Sonata) will run on all, or almost all, of the PPC line. Users will be able to take advantage of all the hard-core features of MacOS 10, just no Yellow Box and MacOS 10's underlying features.

Apple has still yet to confirm what kind of hardware Mac OS X will require. It is still possible that MacOS X will run on the higher end 604e systems. However, Jobs speech makes us think otherwise.
